Philips VG-8240

The Philips VG-8240 is an unreleased prototype MSX2, with 2 extra features, by comparison with the VG-8230 and the VG-8235:

  • this computer has superimpose functionality : there is a superimpose button next to the LEDs, an extra superimpose LED and the back contains a Scart input connector
  • when using superimposing, the external sound input can be stereo and used in this mode with a tape recorder (there's a switch for that at the back of the computer)

The casing has some minor cosmetic differences when compared to the VG-8230: the reset button is gray and there are no cooling openings in the top of the case. Only 15 prototypes of the VG-8240 were made.

Although it's not a NMS machine, this label is indicated in full letters on the machine as New Media Systems. LIke the VG-8230, it has 64kB RAM (not 192kB as indicated on the machine by adding the VRAM). However, some prototypes have the standard Philips QWERTY keyboard (without £ key), just like the VG-8235 for example.

Like the VG-8230 and VG-8235, the VG-8240 has a single sided disk drive. An external disk drive can also be connected at the back of the machine.

The keyboard is adjustable in height. The second cartridge slot is optional as it is closed off by default but can easily be enabled by screwing the supplied cartridge holder onto the computer.
