Matrices for MSX Keyboards

The same character doesn't always match the same position in the matrix. This one varies depending on the keyboard type. Only rows 06 to 08 and the keypad numbers remain invariable.

CODE, Hangul (한글), KANA (かな) and RUS (РУС) keys always have the same position regardless of matrix.

Rows 09 and 10 are those for the numeric keypad.
Row 11 appears only on a few machines and is used for extra keys.

Arabic Matrices

Arabic computers use by default the Arabic mode but can be switched into the International mode by pressing CTRL key at MSX starting.

Color conventions in table:

  • White characters are displayed by default.
  • Cyan characters are displayed when SHIFT key is pressed at same time (or Caps locked).
  • Yellow characters are displayed when the CODE key is pressed
    • The Bawareth Perfect and Sakhr computers in Arabic mode (access to the Arabic characters)
  • Green characters are displayed when CODE key + SHIFT pressed (or CAPS locked)
  • Pink characters are displayed when the GRAPH key is pressed
    • GRAPH key works differently on Bawareth Perfect and Sakhr computers in Arabic mode:
      • the combination of the GRAPH key with an alphabetic key will display an MSX-BASIC instruction on the screen
      • some combinations with GRAPH key can produce accented characters instead of MSX-BASIC instructions
    • STAR key is available only on Sakhr machines with QWERTY keyboard and only active in Arabic mode, it can be used in a similar way to the GRAPH key in Arabic mode to display an MSX-BASIC instruction on the screen
    • some combinations with STAR key can produce accented characters instead of MSX-BASIC instructions
  • Magenta characters are displayed using the GRAPH key + SHIFT at same time. (Same remarks as for pink characters for GRAPH)
