RookieDrive is more than Nextor, it’s FDD emulation from FAT32 USB stick is unparalleled with Konamiman’s latest firmware for it.
I know, that's why I'm saying it's not appealing for what he's currently looking for. Otherwise, I agree, RookieDrive is a good interface.
In theory you are right but MFR is much more versatile. It supports more mappers (ASCII types), Popolon’s cart only supports Konami mapper natively (as it implements the original SCC+ with more RAM). So running games with other mapper types involves patching (which is done automatically by SofaRun and proprietary tools) but it is not perfect (software never is)… so more games will not work with this combination than on MFR or C2.
I know but you have to put the price into perspective and what can't really work. SofaRun is not the only one loader.
If he can sell his Mapper Megaram 512kB for a good price the C2 has more functions. It's a good choice. The MFR SCC+SD+512kB is also a good choice (but a bit expensive though. RAM should be included and not exceed 100 euro. There isn't much in it, and it doesn't have a lot of functions).
My advice would be to stick with the Mapper Megaram for now and gain some experience. Put it in mapper mode, make it boot Nextor. Have a go at Sofarun. See which games work and which won't. Ask questions on the forum.
Thanks for all the advice guys. Normally I'd probably just stick with my MapperM - it does run a lot of games after all, and I also have MiSTer, but I just really like the MSX and would like it to be able to run everything...so will try to get Carnivore, perhaps MFR. I have sent some enquiries, C2 seems to be thin on the ground atm though... (in fact I've just missed the latest batch from my Mapper maker, and he also says chip shortage is a big problem in making the next one).
I'm trying to contact Maxiol via radioshop@maxiol.com email, but get "undelivered mail return". Does anybody know if they are still making Carnivores?
Also, are there any other sellers apart from those on this list?
I bought a Carnivore2 two months ago sending an email to the same direction that you have said. I didn't have any problem. Unfortunately I don't have any other address, all the messaging has been by email using radioshop@maxiol.com
I bought one from them but email address was different. Try this one
So far I did not have much luck on the Carnivore front. No reply from radioshop/supermax, Carmeloco said he's not making them anymore and 8bitsForever only take Paypal, which I've stopped using some time ago.
That leaves MFR, but at 150E it's a bit pricey proposition. So I guess I'm stuck with my good ol' Mapper Megaram for the time being
Carnivore seems to be made in small batches when there is demand, so if you want one you should look at the usual places regularly. I have an MFRSCC+SD and honestly it's great, but I understand it doesn't have the best cost benefit ratio at the moment. In a nutshell, I just advise you to be patient and wait for an opportunity.
Sure, the Mapper will do me for now, it's a fairly capable cart on its own.
Popolon's Sound Cartridge is currently on sale (ebay).
The C2 is also on sale but it's very expensive. (180€)
