Do any of these flash cartridges have ways to hook them up directly to an actual PC so that you don't need to swap the micro-SDs all the time?

For debugging and testing on actual hardware this would save a bit of hassle Smile

Nope, for direct PC interaction you would need Nowind interface (but it is discontinued)

I have a Carnivore2 (on long term loan) and a MegaFlashSCC+SD

They do different things, the C2 has a handy flash ROM where you can load 8Mb worth of ROM images and load that way, from a ROM based boot sequence.

The two cartridges use MM or SofaRun, the latter works fantastic! However, loading a 720k disk image into a 512Mb will not be successful

What actually are the differences in capabilities? I don't think it's all that different, on a high level.

Out of the box (so on a high level) C2 has also FMPac, Scc+ and a 1 Mb mapper (instead of 512kb), apart from if you are going to use it or not. So there is some difference......

Edit: and from financial perspective C2 costs Eur 115,- . A MFR SCC 512 costs Eur 139/149,-.
It's up to the buyer to prefer sd or cf. Make your choice....

MFR also has SCC+, as the full name says.

Ah thanks, overlooked that. Still some difference IMO, I would know what to choose Tongue Wink . However, it's still a matter of personal taste of course.

Of course the best flash cartridge is the Flashjacks, without a doubt... but it's a myth. They say it does not exist ... although I am a lucky holder Big smile Big smile Big smile

But MegaflashRom SCC 512K is a great choice.

Finally, there was the Flashjacks, thank you Pablo. Now someone just has to mention the GR8net.

You can find the specs on the corresponding wiki pages:

MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD 512K wiki page
Carnivore2 wiki page
GR8NET wiki page

I myself use the MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD 512K since none of the other options were available when I got it, and I prefer SD over CF for silly aesthetic reasons. I think in terms of pure specs the MegaFlashROM has been surpassed, but it works well and in terms of ease of use I would recommend it.

As for the MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD; the 512K is optional but I recommend to get it unless you’re certain that you don’t and won’t need it in the future. If you really want to save some money, the 2nd SD slot probably won’t be that useful to you. It comes pre-configured with a ROM disk with Nextor DOS2 and the Multi Mente file manager that it boots into so it’s easy for novices to get going if you have an MSX2 or up.

As for the Carnivore2, I don’t own one but it seems a good option as well with a little more RAM and (emulated) FM-PAC compared to the MFR. For novices getting started I recall there being a SofaRun installation prepared for it, but I don’t know if or how it’s provided to the users (a disk image?).

As for the GR8NET it has a large feature set but its use can get a bit technical so I wouldn’t immediately recommend it to novices to the system. I own one but I bought it primarily for the networking capabilities to develop for in the future, and I also test VGMPlay with it on occasion.

Lastly, all of them work on all MSX generations, and can run Nextor DOS2 (MSX1 and up, 128K RAM) and Multi Mente (MSX2 and up) or SofaRun (MSX1 and up).
