It draws attention most of these games feature sampled voice especially Psycho Soldier that plays an entire vocal song. But MSX Xevious Fardout Saga and Pennant Race don't have Y8950 do they? Edit: Sorry they are the games supported by MSX AUDIO not that their cart has onboard Y8950

I once had an 8-bit ISA card for my PC, with some Yamaha chip in it. I don't know what chip exactly, but there was PCM audio (of course) and a General MIDI sound bank. It was a good card. Good sounds.

Was it XG?

@Pentarou: Tera Drive! I almost forgot its name. Japanese wiki says its ISA bus had insufficient power supply and couldn't support Soundblaster, so Sega later afforded retrofit upgrade. It does have a reputation as one of the earliest PCAT machines that could enter household computer market.

Today Takashima & Co., Ltd. called me and informed that they lost almost all info on the board except that, 1) it was made in Osaka 2) wasn't an official lineup, probably a custom one-off 3) maybe for Taiwanese client 4) had NOTHING to do with Fujitsu FMV.
I sent this to Retrotechie for more evaluation. I hope he can shed light.

Cool that they responded to you though Smile.

I was thinking maybe it could be a board aimed to help arcade machine cross development?

That might be possible given that in early 1990s ports almost equal to the arcade became available with home computers such as FM TOWNS and X68000 so the ADPCM rich Y8950 was chosen as a test bed.

By the way, fun fact, the Y8950 MSX-AUDIO’s ADPCM unit is virtually identical to the YM2608 OPNA’s. The VGMPlay code that deals with samples is mostly the same for the two of them.

So, Yamaha is smart enough to not reinvent wheels if they can just take them from another chip Smile

It smells like PCM part of OPNA can be emulated with Philips Music Module? Hannibal

Quite funny, i unexpectedly discovered that it is implemented already. Was listening to this vgm rip today (which is actually for OPN and plays well with SFG clone + PSG) but it has two tracks for OPNA and i was unaware about that. And i had GR8NET inserted as well, and it played all PCM (and drums, i'm not sure if drums were emulated too or they were samples in vgm itself) via GR8NET's MSX-AUDIO. Time to try more OPNA music?

Damn good job, @Grauw
