Randam: I know I'd definitely be interested in a finished FF1 translation, especially considering that it has an extended script. Actually, I think such a project would be a pretty good way to breathe new life into MSX a bit as well concerning Final Fantasy fans. If the news was out that an 'Extended Story' version of the original Final Fantasy was out for MSX, it would most likely generate some new interested in MSX I think. : )

I've not played XZR much, although it looks like a great game series. I own the first two games for PC-88 and I believe the remakes (In Japanese) for Turbo Duo Super CD Rom 2. I "think" those versions might have official English releases if I'm not mistaken.

Well it is just a summery of translations out there. Some have files, som just links to a translated manual.
Take Aleste for instance, click the aleste link and to to Translations (2). here you can download the english and portuguese versions.
When you click the aleste 2 link and go to translations you will go to a translated manual.

@JohnHassink: I wouldn't know what's not to like about XZR. Possibly only that the third part wasn't released on msx Smile The game has a nice and original story and good gameplay. Probably people don't like it as much as some other RPGs because they haven't tried it as much as some of the more well known RPGs. Sa-Zi-Ri also has an awesome concept behind the game: first time I played it I laughed seeing you attack by yelling Smile Haven't gotten far into the game because I got annoyed by all the loading screens. A turbo mode and less loading would be very welcome for that game. But I can tell there is a solid game behind it. Might be interesting indeed.

@SkyeWelse: Indeed there are official English releases of XZR on some system(s). Don't know if they are good translations or if the games are the same. That is even tricky to determine with games which are made by mostly the same team on different systems: even in those cases you find (small) script differences. Sometimes extra sidequests are added or left out and stuff like that. But as long as the MSX version isn't translated it might be a good option for some.

You might be right about a FF1 translation being able to draw some new attention to MSX from FF fans. Besides it has nice FM music and the graphics are said to be a bit better.

@ Randam
There are a lot of differences. Here are some of the things they changed for the Western releases:

* Opiates became "poisons" (for instance, marihuana is now "Heart Poison"), healing drugs got to be "tonics" and codeine was rebrandished as "coffee"

* Probably to be politically correct, names of countries, cities, people and groups were changed. For instance, crusaders became the "Luciel Forces", the Knights Templar are now "Dune Cavalry" and Jerusalem was renamed "El-In"

* Character names also suffered changes. Lurmy became "Rumi", Hugues de Payens was erroneously retranslated as "Huug de Pains"

* The village where crucified people are burnt to death by the crusaders was completely removed

* As far as I can tell, some conversations have been made 'lighter' and 'friendlier'. For instance, when returning to Solomon's temple and encountering the puddle of blood, Sadler exclaims "Oh P.U."
Upon receiving the shard of glass from the shepherd boy, he gets thanked in wordings that seem exaggerated (surprisingly, Sadler's remark after first meeting Hugues was maintained, which was "If you lie to me, I'll come back and feed your intestines to you.")

* This makes no difference script-wise, but Sadler isn't seen smoking anymore. Not ever

By the way, there is a lot wrong with the Genesis version gameplay-wise, but that's not the issue here. Wink

If it's interesting, here is a How-To-Play for Sa-Zi-Ri:
http://www.msx.org/forum/msx-talk/software-and-gaming/how-pl...

(by the way, I state therein that insulting or flattering the enemy in RPG mode isn't relevant to game progression, but I'm not too sure about that now)

Was to be expected that they changed stuff for the western release, but this sounds like even more changes than are normal. Sound like they royally fucked things up. Always better to go for a new translation as you have now proven.

Thx for the link to that Sa-zi-ri thread! Might be fun sometime to look into. Telenet games are nice, with the exception of the msx version of valis 1: too bad they skipped out half of the levels and all of the story from the pc88 version.

The Genesis port is a bit of a disgrace. Broken gameplay, jerky controls, dumbed down maps and boss fights, graphical glitches, boring music, and on top of that, all the censoring.

And the list goes on. Kindhy was changed from a rather silent, mysterious character to a gibberish spewing half-wit. Fakhyle's face had to be veiled for reasons obscure. And several small, annoying things, such as the scene where you meet up with a guy who kept alive just to talk to you and hand over a letter. In this version, he has simply already died and you find the letter on his body (the original game actually states that it's a desert in Syria, but in this port it's -naturally- just called "DESERT").

There are some improvements, though, such as that you can now also sell stuff, that you can't wimp yourself out of regular fights anymore by calling up the menu, and the addition of some new enemies and cutscenes. It's still worth playing if you are a fan.

Yes, I love Telenet! I do agree with you on Valis 1. My guess is that they couldn't fit it into the ROM.

Sounds like the MSX version for XZR is a lot better.

Valis 1 is one of the few games which are actually worse on msx than pc88. And that is quite a shame because the story is quite nice... This game almost warrants a remake.

From what I read about the differences in XZR, it definitely sounds like the MSX versions need a real translation then! : )

I didnt see Shalom Knightmare 3 on the translation list. Not to get off topic but is that game 100% translated?

I would play XZR1 but I hear you can get stuck later in the game even if you know japanese.
