10 days before Christmas we got the idea to do a nice theme-based music competition. The MRC MuSiXmas Challenge was born. In Christmas spirit, every contestant would get one prize by default: a cool MSX button. The winner of the challenge (soon to be announced) wins an extra prize: ASCII's MSX Magazine 1 (including MSXPLAYer). 10 days later we had received 11 entries. Time for an overview:

For your convenience, we have added mp3 versions of all entries, recorded with 'the real thing'. As announced earlier, Hally of Vorc.org will now have a good listen to all these entries and decide which one is going to be the winner. The MRC would like to thank everybody who contributed to this challenge for the great entries. Once again, you have shown how much one can do with MSX, even in a short timespan. Keep up the good job!

Sorry for the pops'n'hisses in the MP3s, guyz... although they do add to a certain 'retro feel', better MP3 files will be uploaded soon! Smile

Crap to emulators again Sad... My tune sounds awful on a real machine... Another disappointment...

I wonder why the envelopes of ownwaves are different on the real thing Sad

@Snout: So the clicks should not be in my tune on a real MSX? That might enlighten the disappointment which I feel...

in these mp3's, every entry has ticks ..

I got little worried that the OFF events on the emulator were faster than the ones on the real thing... but on the other hand completely the other side around as well...

if the fantasia ticks, the OFF is too slow, but the choirs releaserate is way too fast...

/me confused...

blueMSX 2.1.

Something got me thinking now... I wonder (for myself) howmuch use it'll be to release music as a plain MWM. It seems not to sound how it supposed to do once it's in the wide open world. I'll stick to mp3 exclusively from now on, to avoid future disappointments.

I do have a real moonsound, but it lacks RAM until now... That's why I chose for the emulator. I never thought that the envelopes I made manually would crack up on another platform Sad

Hmm, Oldschool MSXmas sound better on my NMS8250... I have a feeling Snout used his turboR and set it to 50Hz when playing... I hear the glitches Wink

Apparently the PLAY statement is fully optimized for that frequency, as I still hear the glitches I know from the PLAY on my turboR and the 50Hz tempo is faster as well.

I took the liberty to make an MP3 at right speed etc. You can download it here.

Good job to all indeed. There are some quite nice tunes in there. Pity there wasn't a 12th entry though... Would have been nice for the "12 Days of Christmas" idea or something.

Recorded the tune myself, as it should sound:

It differs quite a lot.

Right, MP3 isn't a free format... My favorite MP3 converter (dBpowerAmp) went to a paid version for MP3 encoding because they were forced to by Thomson (who bought the rights from Frauenhofer). In any case, I am most definitely not going to pay for that, so whenever I convert to an audio format, I convert to OGG now Smile.

I once gave ogg the benevit of the doubt to give it a try... The size was nice, but the sound was horrible, like having your equalizers in an overreacted V shape... I stick to mp3, cuz ogg is only for my computer and mp3 is of multipurpose on more devices I have... And why bother about a few mb per tune since there's enough place to store stuff anyway...

ogg, nice try, but nothing for me...

uh .... ?

What ogg encoder did you use then? I use Oggdrop .. no issues with Oggdrop... and don't you just love that rotating stoned fish? Smile
