Hi,

I bought this beauty on Marktetplace (dutch Ebay).

https://www.msx.org/wiki/R.%26_J.Jansen_Memory_Mapper_256/512

But without the disk with software to use it. When I put it in one of the slots nothing happens.. I suppose I need some software to access the memory? Does anyone have tips / software?

I have an MSX 2 Philips 8250.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I bought the same memory mapper when it came out and it didn't came with a disk. The only thing, next to the cart, in the box was a little flyer with some msx-basic instructions.

Unfortunately at the msx bootup it doesn't show how much ram there is, but you can type the following in basic

?(INP(&HFF)XOR&HFF)*16+16

Standard it will say 128 on your nms 8250, but with the memory mapper it should say 256 or 512.
In my case it will say 512 (you can't see on the box or cart if it is a 256 or 512 expansion

Or, you can download metal gear 2 diskversion, if it boots your mapper works Smile

It isn't that strange that nothing happens, because if you startup in Basic there is no difference. Also, the value shown at startup beneath the MSX logo maybe hardcoded in your system. Again, misleading you into thinking it doesn't work.

You could use MSXMEM to see the actual mapper size.

hmm, I once owned another memory expansion and my msx would should the amount of ram at the startup. But my msx had some conversions in it, so maybe something was added to show the real ram present in it.

The MSX BIOS selects the larger memory mapper available as primary (TurboR forces its internal RAM).
Then is the software that uses that memory mappers. The memory in MSX is set as 4 pages of 16KB that can be exchanged by others in the "warehouse" of the memory mapper, but only 4 are visible by the CPU at a time.
