Wasn't there a way to built in a PC Disk-drive like in a Turbo R? Then you wouldn't have this problem ever again. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay, but there might be some extra modification necessary.

So it looks like that's the route I should go then? Put a new PC drive in that doesn't have the belt. Will it run original MSX floppy disk games or will I need copies?

That'll work but it'll cost you a cartridge slot and you'll have your disk stuffed with stuff that's already inside your computer.
