openMSX is a perfect MSX emulator. MSX and SVI-3x8 are not compatible in hardware and software design. Yet, openMSX emulates SVI-3x8 perfectly, why?! Maybe because both are identical in hardware components. So, is there any other computer which is identical in hardware to MSX?! If you know please write its name. Maybe with little effort openMSX can emulate it. There are some Z80 based computers but I don't know if their hardware are identical to MSX hardware.

Computers which I think are Z80 based:

  • ZX Spectrum
  • NEC (PC-6001, PC-6601*, 8001BE*, 8801mkII*, 8801mkIISR*
  • Enterprise 64 & 128
  • Memotech MTX 500/512
  • Sord m-5
  • Texas Instruments TI99-4*
  • TRS 80*
  • Amstrad CPC

what else?!
* Computer which I'm not certain whether it is Z80 based or not.

I googled "Z80 based computers" and this is what I found:

We have recently added support for the ColecoVision and we are working on support for some Sega machines like the SG-1000. And there are plans to support the VDP of the Sega Master System to support Franky/Playsoniq and maybe then also the Sega Master System itself.
No promises at all though!

The reason is not only the Z80. That's just one part of the story. It also helps if the sound and graphics chips are the same or very similar to MSX.

I heard today that SN76489 DCSG support was added to openMSX a few months back, which is very nice because so far I always had to run to the real machine to test it or record with it… :)

(And my expander lowers the output volume of everything in it so that’s sometimes a bit troublesome…)

offtopic but i need to ask: is that a gouda MK5 by any chance? because I noticed my expander does that as well.

The Tatung Einstein is the most identical in hardware to MSX: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatung_Einstein

The Texas Instruments TI-99/4 and 4A use a TMS9900 CPU. There is very good emulation for those under MAME and Classic99.

The TRS-80 before the Color Computer series did use Z80 CPU, but oddly, they still called them TRS-80 Color Computer when using a completely incompatible Motorola CPU.

Talking about your list:

  • Texas Instruments TI99 isn't Z80 based, but it uses the same VDP of MSX1
  • Sord M-5 is close enough of MSX to have an MSX "emulator/adapter", like SVI-318/328 had. This adapter is emulated by MAME.
  • MTX seems to be in the same class of Sord M-5, but given its release date, I don't know why Memotech didn't release a MSX with some additional features, instead of their original design.

If we are talking about machines similar to MSX, some good adds in the list would be the Tatung Einstein and the Sega SC-3000.

Don't forget Sega Master System and Coleco (consolle, but similar hardware )

In the near future, if openMSX be able to emulate at least those identical MSX hardware such are (Sord m5, MTX, Tatung Einstein, etc.) then it should be renamed openZ or something.
What about Enterprise 64 and Enterprise 128, and NEX PC-6001, are they MSX identical hardware or what?!
