I looked at it, but then came across some compiler-specific code that needs to be modified... which discouraged me a bit too much

Which lines ? I can tell you what they do. Basically the sole compiler specific parts I can remember are the:
outp(0x99, data) that is converted in the out 0x99,a and the asm("DI"); asm("EI"); that includes di and ei in the asm.
