I personally would like MSX to stay a retro machine (or rather I don't care much about modern expansions). But I do think that some expansions such as cf card support and more advanced flashroms are quite handy. I'm not very fond of extensions that changes the appearance of the MSX when playing a game or demo, such as GFX9000.

The poll isn't that clear of what is retro like expansions but I assumed GFX9000 is a modern expansion (after 1991) so I voted for the middle one.

Retro has probably a different meaning for anyone. For me the point in time where retro ends is the introduction of 3d. Either HW or SW. So Wolf3d and Doom are not retro to me anymore. Things with 2d gameplay or semi-3d gameplay (outrun, isometric games, etc.) are retro to me.

It's hard to draw a line somewhere.. I'd say the g9k/moonsound are MSX, esp. as they've been made in a time when the scene was flourishing. I'm sure even you might 've wanted those back then.. Tongue The reason people are now different towards those chips is the availability of PC's with vastly superior hardware.

A shame that people tell again nonsense about the products we sell. Wolf the GFX is developed in the glorious time only and that remains my main issue is that Stefan as well as Peter Burkhard sold that together with its policy that it was a TR thingie.,koen and me were the only ones with msx2.
At that time there were enough programming groups mayhem, umax etc ,so what let them.
Instead of doing something we all gonna discuss and discuss.Go to a retro fair and you see that msx isnot considered as one of them , the demands for new and the existing products is still so well that is on that side quite a luxuery.

@wolf despite the update as regards the carts of manbow2 , the remark is still visible in the review.Could it be removed or corrected as well.

sunrise: I've based my point purely on the fact that there isn't much G9k software today (I couldn't even mention 5 products). Whether the card was made in glorious times or whether there was an initial tR marketing issue isn't much relevant. In the end, quite some g9k's have been sold, right? Even to MSX2 users? Few hundreds? I'm not saying the card is all wrong, I'm just saying no-one's using it, and that's something no-one can deny.. no? From the head, I could only mention 2 products: X-Tazy which isn't finished, and TNI's snowfall entry for the snowfall challenge @ MRC, years ago. If we count the revival years starting from 2002, then we've just about 5 years of glorious years behind us, that's actually *more* years than the time we've had for the G9k from its release until the first signs of the silent years. These modern years couldn't be better: years in which cross development should have made G9k development much more easy than it was in the 90's. After all, we could all just use Photoshop if we want, and convert the whole shebang back to, say, 64 colors. People could've made simple but practical map editors using simple languages like Visual Basic or Blitz basic. Internet is a source of images and ideas, emulators of other computers and consoles is a rich source of ideas, internet makes team-communication and development so much easier (just send over complete projects within seconds). I'd say: forget the 90's, last 5 years -and going on today- have been the best times to develop G9k games! Why didn't this happen? Why do people develop for MSX1 instead? 70-some MSX1 games during the MSXdev years..

And FYI: we (Infinite) have discussed already to try a G9k version of the MSX1/MSX2 game we'll be presenting @ Nijmegen. So don't worry, at least we'll contribute to the G9k database. Tongue (it's just that we need a few more tools which have to be made first)

Added to that: the discussion isn't just about the G9k, I also couldn't mention much tR-only software that really uses native tR stuff such as the R800 speed and the PCM, making it impossible to run on anything less than a tR. I also couldn't mention much software that must use a mass storage device (Nyyrikki's Dragon's Lair demo is the only thing I can mention), and we've yet to see whether the MP3 player will result in unique software.

I would be very happy with one OCM, but it looks like it's only a dream.
I fear that my MSX 1 machine will not last for too long, and the Wii Virtual Channel promise for MSX games is only vapour until now. Looks like I'll have to go to the dark side and use (oh God, forgive me) *gasp* emulators.

since my MSX1 machine lasted only upto 1999 and it was hard to get an MSX with german keyboard and working disk drive, I had to go to the ''dark side'' and use emulaters (however it wasn't until after I was asked to do the german translation for blueMSX) for experiencing that it is quite nice there! Emulators are great!
