I should say that i never used it with old roms which is being patched by the tools, i used only with games purchased in digital format such as Kai Magazine megarom games, so i never experienced any issue. But from my understanding there could be a simple tool based on FL16 which is not patching any rom but just flashes it as is, if i understood the issue correctly

BTW that cartridge was developed as a solution for distribution of new games, that's why it has jumpers instead of some more handy external switches or so. For playing old games there are more other solutions (any of GRCarniMegaFlashJacksVoreSCC8NET+SDMMC megasolutions lol)

Also handy for testing bugfixes and translations for old games, and maybe even hiding them inside the parent game's cartridge shell if you like to, provided the shell and fastener dimensions align with this PCB (sometimes you might be lucky that way! Unfortunately there was no standard for that though)

So gdx are you saying if the ROM doesn't need patching it will be fine, but otherwise (if FL/8/K4 knew how to patch that one that's BTW not actually ASCII16) it won't get patched correctly?

Yes, several games works only by applying a patch depending on the picked mapper. 32kB Roms, Manbow 2 and megaroms with specific mapper for example.

Fortunately a lot of mapper patches exist already to transform an almost-standard mapper usage into a standard one though. Any FL16 can happily flash a ROM made with the other mappers

It is less convenient to have to look for the adequate patch or rom. And then, FL16 Patches the 32KB Roms. This is useful to make many Roms work with a 16K mapper but it becomes annoying for the plain Rom mode.

I wonder if FL, FL8, FLK4 could be modified to use ASCII16 paging while flashing to support this cartridge a little better. Should just be changing the page switching addresses, right? (of course it needs to be either with a command line flag or renamed to avoid confusion)

I thinking about adding the option to disable patches and do a few improvement since a long time but it is not enough for this FlashRom Multimapper.

I think it would be easier to modify the epm program. RBSC probably won't do it because it makes it less simple to use and their purpose was probably to make a low cost cartridge.
