Hello everyone Smile

I'm in the process of building an Omega MSX2 (thank you Sergey for the Gerber files). But I got thinking before ordering the boards and I'm not certain that the software I want to play is compatible. I mainly want to play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 in addition to learning about the MSX in general. Does the Omega support these 2 games? In particular I know the Japanese version of MG1 is supposed to have a form of region protection so will that be an issue?

Also, as a separate question altogether, how does a counterfeit MG2 even work? Does it not need a special chip called the Konami SCC on the board? Yes, I'm asking because I don't have a couple hundred to drop on a supposed legit copy on eBay.

Welcome to the world of MSX, SonsofOcelot!
The Omega is simply a rebuilt MSX with original parts. With the V9958 and the appropriate ROM it is on MSX2+ level, so it can play the programs you mentioned. However, it has no SCC built in, which was not a standard MSX computer of the last millennium. Since you need a storage medium for the Omega (he does not know any SD cards yet) it is recommended to buy a MFR or a Carnivore2, which you can also build yourself.

hamlet: Am I correct in guessing that the Carnivore2 would emulate the SCC as well as act as a storage medium?

Fantastic! Brings the cost up a bit, but should be well worth it. I'm excited to start building! Thank you both so much!

If you want to play Metal Gear 1, just use the patched version with the improved English translation. I didn't check, but I'm sure it also has the region protection removed. And if not, there's probably a patch for that available as well.
