I just love platform games, so, two months ago I picked up programming on the MSX again, tempted by the idea of a "nice smooth scrolling platformer". It's currently early days -I lack audio, enemies and other stuff, but that's coming Smile The engine supports 4/8 way scrolling as well, but I just need to add a clean line-interrupt to get rid of some artifacts at bottom of screen when scrolling vertically.

Arne over at AndroidArts was kind to let me use his art, so most of the background is made by him. The sprite... erhm... is converted by me :) and is only temporary. And it's MSX2, 128k VRAM and screen 4, by the way :)

Now I just have to finished what I have started. Too many projects get stranded halfway :-?

Haha that title Smile. It looks nice! Despite its limitations screen 4 can really do quite pretty graphics. Those ground tiles and those bushes look particularly good. Screen 4 is a good basis for a smooth scrolling MSX2 platforming game, and I’m looking forward to what it will become!

Woot. Awesome. Screen4 smooth scrolling platform. This is what I just like. Now beware when you say yiu will finish it. I will keep you to that word. Finishing a screen 4 platform can be challenging.

I know, one thing is tech, another is content creation. Making content up to proper standards, requires both skills and a lot of work.

And when it comes to tech, I need to continue optimize a whole lot. Well, a whole lot further Smile I probably need to do all the tricks in the book to get all that I want, into the game -- we'll see.

Hmmm looks kinda familiar ;-) But besides that, it looks quite impressive Smile
If you ever come to a stage to releasing it, would it be OK if I would add it to the homebrew section of my site? (https://homebrew.file-hunter.com)

Thanks.

Too many questions needs to be answered before I can answer that I guess. I see that people release games physically these days. I wonder if that could be an option. I also wonder if rom is the right medium. Currently I was thinking of a bunch of levels + savegames. Not sure if that is viable on MSX2, in practise.

Does filehunter.com require rom?

I can use rom, disk, harddisk, cassette, etc... So that is not the problem. And a version on my site doesn't have to stand in the way of doing a physical release. And even then there are several ways to handle things. From some some games I only have a demo version online, with a link to the location people can buy the full game (For example Nogalious)). From other games I have the full version online with a link to the author's site and a like to a shop to buy a physical copy (For example Night Knight). With other authors I have agreed to wait untill they give me a notice that I can put a game online (For example Zakil Wood MSX2 Remake).
I can imagine that if you are going for a physical release, you want to sell as many copies as possible and that having an online version available might conflict with that, so :)
For now, I'd suggest to have some fun programming the game. Adding it to my site, in whatever way, is just one of the many options :)

Hello, can you give us some indication of the technique used?
It looks like a scroll in 256 x 192 pixels with no black bands on the sides of the screen

Thanks
