You can buy and reprogrammable cartridge and write TESTRAM.ROM into it. Or you can buy a cheap pre-programmed cartridge with this ROM file. Carnivore or MegaFlashROM 512 cartridges will also give you a RAM expansion in addition to TESTRAM. The MMM cartridge will give you only a RAM expansion.

Please contact me by mail if you want reprogrammable or pre-programmed cartridges.

On the topic of making EPROM cartdriges, do you think this ANDO TYPE-9703 will be of any use to make the TESTRAM cartridge? Smile

On another question: Which IC could be the one in where the BIOS or the MSX-BASIC reside on? Smile

EDIT: I've found a ROM IC! Is a quite big one:

Unfortunately I cannot find any datasheets about this ROM IC so I have no way to the the voltage input. :(

If the machine doesn't even boot, try an external RAM cartridge before anything else.

ROM or RAM? because I don't have any of either. A ROM one could be something cheap near here but RAM cartridges are found nowhere near here, so I'd need to go into shipping.

Particularly I was avoiding shipping because of the time we'd have to wait before it arrives (For example, our last try to ship something from the US took three months before it finally arrived and our last international one took about four months) and because I still have the MSX open in the desk and the screws to the open (I should save these then).

Talking about ROMS, what games should run when an MSX only boots into black screen?

MSX may not boot (black screen) because of bad RAM, but with RAM expansion or any game cartridge it may be able to boot. That will clearly show you that the problem is in RAM. If the machine doesn't boot at all, then VRAM or VDP could be suspected. Even if those are ok, there are many other reasons why the machine doesn't boot.

The chip on the board looks like a 32kb masked rom, you can use 27c256 EPROM chip with a pre-programmed BIOS+Basic in it, it's just that you need to find the correct BIOS pair for your machine. But that should be done only after you make sure that RAM/VRAM is OK.

That monstrocity EPROM programmer may (or may not - check the manual) be able to program 27c256 chips, but you need to erase them with UV eraser first.

To make a RAM cartridge, what would be the specifications of the RAM chip?
And should the PCB be double-sided? Because I never understood how you can make double sided PCB circuits, I only worked with single sided PCBs Shocked!

Also, I already ditched the idea of programming with this EP-ROM programmer as I don't have the manual and it's one of the rarest EP-ROM programmers ever (basically, I barely found any other images of this one that not where my own images and I cannot find it's manual on-line neither know what its software is). The only way I can get the manual for this EPROM programmer is winning this auction (IDK if it's an auction because everything's in Japanese) but that would be mundane and kills the point of not having to wait for ship.

for the PCB double sided you can cutting a connector in a old ISA PC card

a 64k sram of ELEKTOR easy to make is on MSXvillage

I think at all, I'll be doing the PCB double sided myself, we barely have any old ISA PC cards (I haven't found one yet), and i found a tutorial on how to make homemade double sided PCBs.

By the way, what PCB editing program do you recommend to me to edit double sided PCBs? PCB Wizard, the one I'm used to, is for beginners and it only supports one side if I recall.
