I've also done very game friendly speech engine for SCC that can talk during game. It is very CPU friendly (and tiny) while comparing to ie. regular music player... Other than that it is quite bad and has somewhat Finnish accent. Smile Too bad I've had no any game / demo projects where I could have used it. (Only example is on this song). Point is: I also would like to see speech used more in games as an effect. In MSX Info Update 2008 intro demo I had also even worse speech synthesizer for MSX tR that was ie. singing Finnish folk song "Porsaita äidin oomme kaikki" (Mama's little piggies) and Metsäkukkia (Forrest flowers, traditional wedding waltz)... Yes, I know... it is not a game either...

The speech effect is simply made by playing a note and changeing the voice 10 times / sec. So this is more like speech synthesizer based on normal SCC voices. Very light solution, good for games :-)

Do you know if your method is the same used by Konami? Not sure if this is already known-investigated but the voices remind me Konami Pennant Race games a lot. BTW the music itself is awesome.

Seems likely that it is. More likely than ARTRAG’s method I reckon, because it’s simpler, and very suitable for vocal synthesis…

I have no idea, but I think it is likely... I'm very sure they did not use ARTRAG's method. I also know that SCC can be turned in to PCM output device similar to MSX tR (Except bit 7 inverted and memory mapped) with little tweaking, but I'm also relatively sure that Konami software developers did not know the proper procedure to get the chip to correct state. (ASM provided, if requested)

Afteroids (spanish msx1 game from Zigurat 1988) has a sampled voice:

Megaz Monkey Do (Compile 1989) is a game made in basic, which features very good quality psg sampled voices and sound effects.

Life on Mars has a secret sampled speech if an SCC chip is present, when you find the secret silver spoon hidden on all kai magazine games (this feature was made by artrag).

EDIT: msx1 game "the protector" (1985) had a sampled Jackie chan voice when you completed a level:
