I can bring the PX-7 to Nijmegen, but I'm not planning to buy a Raspberry Pi and play with it... I don't have time for that now.

Hi I have raspberry and px-7, can I set it up myself? Can I use a unmodded sega gun?

Thanks to Manuel (who also managed to get 2 weird RCA adapters on the fair !) , we have been able to test PiLD on a PX-7, and... it nearly works. Game loads and starts, videos are playing back. You just need to configure Raspberry's output to PAL instead of NTSC. The problem on PX-7 (and PAL mode) is that all timings are wrong, at least in Badlands. It makes the game just unplayable.

I've been thinking about the problem after this week-end beers had passed, and I think it's because the game code is doing it's time measurements based on VDP interruptions.

There are 2 (bad I guess) solutions here:
1 - Slow down the video in PAL mode so that the frames are in sync. Why not, but slowing down the sound by a 50/60 factor might sound weird ?
2 - Patch the game code "time markers". That would work for Badlands, but other games would still have backgrounds out of sync.
Changing the MSX video frequency is not an option as we are on MSX1 (but changing the VDP might be one).

I'm wondering if any version of the Laserdiscs games have ever been produced for the European / 50Hz market ?

I think solution 1 would probably be the best. Just curious about how low-pitched would the sound be...

That should work fine on the NTSC version. There's small soldering to be done : you need to create a DIN9 plug that goes out of the MSX and plug it in the Raspberry, with 1 diode and 2 resistors. Nothing too hard though.

You also need a Raspberry composite + audio jack cable.

Rest is just copying the executable with the .OGV file and launch it. Only Badlands is supported for now.

I'll try to put schematics, instructions and downloads on my website this week-end.

Hi Louthrax and happy new year!
I've just been directed to your work on the LD Pi player, and I've just can't found any soft, or hard to make it real.
Any news on that?
Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Crashman,

And welcome here Smile The funny thing is that I've been resurrecting this project during these Christmas vacations (with other projects and MSX related things).

I had to re-write some parts of the code for the latest Raspberry distribution ("Jessie" IIRC), but it works, at least for Konami's Badlands.

That project is a bit tricky because the Raspberry is pushed to its limits to decode the Theora/Vorbis file in real time, and there's also some soldering required to link the MSX to the Raspberry GPIO.

I was planning to have a demo of PiLD at next Nijmegen with other games working (and maybe with a menu allowing to choose which LaserDisc game to launch), but not sure this will be ready this year.

Well, anyway, I'd be glad to provide you the executable and instructions to create the MSX-GPIO cable. The Theora/Vorbis file also need to be converted a bit (lowering the resolution).

Send me a PM if you're interested!
