In the pre-order announcement for the MoonSound clone Dal-So-Ri the MSX community expressed interest in an OPL4 music disk so that they could use it with their new Dal-So-Ri. MRC webmaster John Hassink spoke these memorable words in the topic: "I could make a selection from my unreleased stuff... it's quite a lot. But I'm not really in the mood to make a menu etc".

Of course that’s an invitation to team up and get some MoonSound music released. So John asked Hans Cnossen and Robert Vroemisse to join, Meits joined and invited more composers of ye olden days and started coding a replayer. In the end this resulted in a collaboration with a lot of famous names from the MSX scene, as you can enjoy music from Master of Audio, Meits, Jorito, Hans Cnossen, DandAN, John Hassink, Robert Vroemisse
, Bart Roijmans, Ruud van de Moosdijk and Omega
. A lot of hard work later (about 9 months!) this beast of a music disk with both classic tracks and new ones is finally a reality: Dutch MoonSound Veterans (DMV) is here for you to enjoy.

DMV is indeed a beast of a music disk and it comes in multiple versions:

  • A set of 3 disk images, filled to the brim with music
  • A Full Throttle edition, installable on hard disk (or available as hard disk image) that contains all music of these 3 disk images as well as a selection of tracks that were too big to fit on a normal disk

To use all of this, you need at least an MSX2, a disk drive and a MoonSound. If you want to run Full Throttle, you need a mass storage device and a MoonSound with 640kB SRAM.

To celebrate the release, scene composer Omega will host a listening party on Twitch, which you can join to listen to the music, both the new and the classics and to chat up with fellow MoonSound fans. You can join the party by tuning in to http://www.twitch.tv/omegamsx on Wednesday July 22nd at 21:00 CET. Hope to see you there!

Two tracks on #1 turned out to have a wrong samplekit, on #FT there was a samplekit that had a hard time with emulators and FM-Blaster and #FT turned out to have an outdated MBWAVE basic replayer.
All that info reached me within one hour after release... Murphy knows his way...

Well, Moonsound emulation on Open MSX (and Blue MSX) isn't 100%. A few instruments sound a tad different and some "tricks" with MBwave don't work.

Still, the README.pdf assumes most people will experience DMV in an emulator. Only 'die hard MSX guys' will use a real MSX with a real Moonsound.

Overall a great songdisk/collection that gives a nice show of the OPL4's abilities!

I had a good time listening to the songs (although this is really just a quick first impression) and I appreciate the effort that was put into getting this thing together. I want to especially thank the artists that aren't active in the MSX scene anymore, for donating their work and I hope this release may inspire them to do more things for MSX (again).

Some songs I thought were pretty good, some I didn't like at all, obviously due to personal taste. Although I do have to say while some songs sound great from "arrangement" point of view, others I felt were lacking in some departments. For example, I felt a few songs could have sounded better with different drumsamples, and in other cases I didn't really liked the instruments used. I listened to this one in bluemsx and I assume the same emulator bugs like in openmsx occur here as well, so perhaps some of my gripes are just caused by this.

In the manual there is a mention of new songs written especially for this project. Since I am not too familiar with the MSX demo scene, I can't really find out which songs are new and which ones are old. Will this be revealed later or is there some secret menu in the song disks that lists them? Big smile

To find out which tunes are new, you could always load them in MBWAVE (there's just a few tunes anyway Wink )

This project inspired one of the "old guys" to be active. Emphasys member Master of Audio did the graphics crunching/decrunching, hi speed text print, smooth selector bar movement AND fade routines in one single BIN file per graphic. He also wrote a new tune especially for this project. He found some time in the pauses he had while coding for Terraria.

Hi, can't wait to test this!

I'm having a slight technical problem here. I'm trrying to mount the HD-disk image in Linux to move the files onto an SDcard for my MegaFlashRomSCCSD+. If I mount the disk image in Linux, it will write something on it (md5sum changes, haven't done a diff yet) and can not display the files in the subdirectories (dmv1, dmv2, dmv3). Maybe I'm trying to move this to test on my real MSX some convoluted way =D

I think I have mounted some MSX HD images previously, but it seems that a modern Linux kernel FAT drivers have some issues with this FAT16 image Big smile. That or there's something funny (non-standard) with the image. It does work in OpenMSX however!

Has anyone else mounted this image in Linux without issues?

EDIT: OpenMSX discmanipulator to the rescue, I'm listening full steam right now on my NMS8255!

hi Wild_Penguin,

The HD disk image is to be used inside an MSX emulator. It is MSX formatted, FAT12 and frankly, I'm surprised you can mount it in Linux at all Smile

Glad you managed to get it to your MSX Smile

Hi Omega!

The whole point was, I want to use the files on a real MSX instead of an emulator (also to test my new FM Blaster cart, which seems to be working btw), I just needed to transfer the files somehow! This I managed with the help of the said OpenMSX discmanipulator command Smile . So problem solved. I could always have used the 3 disk images, but I also wanted to try the full steam section on my new cart...

[OT]
Linux is quite powerfull, it has support for all kinds of file systems! Think of Linux as having a kind of Daemon Tools integrated into it, except that this tool is about ten times more powerfull as Daemon Tools Wink. Disk image or a real device, it makes no difference in the end on Linux (well, handling full disk images with partition table as opposed to a single partition image is a little bit more complicated, but still doable ... oh and for example CD images with audio tracks (CUE/BIN/WAV) need some additiolan FOSS).

I think here we have a 32MB fat16 image? Curiously Linux (file command) reports it as FAT12, but I think you can not have >16MB fat12 partitions? I tried to force mount it as fat16, but that made no difference in accessing the sub dirs. Also, fsck.msdos reports: Filesystem has 4093 clusters but only space for 3070 FAT entries. This is the first FAT file system image I've come across I've had trouble mounting in Linux. I have even created a HD images in OpenMSX, and have moved files back and forth by mounting in Linux without any issues, for example (but not while openMSX is running, just to be on the safe side).

Wild_Penguin: You don’t need to deal with the disk image, that’s just for convenient use in emulators. The archive also contains a DMVFT.zip with the loose files, which you can just extract to an SD card.

(Also, max size for FAT12 partitions is 32M, though maybe MSX-DOS1 can only deal with 16M.)

Always nice to see this product being "trending" again, but as Grauw said, there's a ZIP for this exact purpose. The HD image is just there because of the use in emulators. And just because there seem to be quite some of them. The music is best played on a real MSX as some of the tunes go bad in emulators. Wink
