Just over three months ago MRC's tenliner challenge was announced. The goal was to let people make a game, demo or tool within the limit of only ten lines of Basic code. To spice things up, participants got the liberty to use one media file for either graphics or music.
The response to this challenge was of a greater proportion than we'd ever dare dream. No less than nineteen (!) submissions were done by people from all around the world. Contestants honoppe with Arrows and OldBitsRulez with Fog Hunter registered to MRC around the start of the challenge while MR.GHOST with Sidestep isn't a registered MRC user at all.

Now for the results:

  1. Bubble Dream by Kotai from Spain with 8,20 points
  2. Shuriken by Imanok from Spain with 8,13 points
  3. Runner 2000 by viejo_archivero from Spain with 8,10 points
  4. Arrows by honoppe from Japan with 7,87 points
  5. Lifeguard by turbor from Belgium with 7,63 points
  6. Shangri-La by BlueCrystal from the Netherlands with 7,50 points
  7. London Rain Matrix by aorante from Spain with 7,47 points
  8. Retromania by PlainSpooky from Brazil with 6,97 points
  9. Sidestep by MR. GHOST from Korea with 6,93 points
  10. Fog Hunter by OldBitsRulez from Brazil with 6,90 points
  11. Train by Oscar Centelles from Spain with 6,87 points

Woa *that* was really unexpected! Thanx goes to the jury for this 3rd place and congrats to every entry maker out there for this contest. Also congratulations to contest organizers: you have set a challenge that the MSX developers have accepted and thus participate in this times of "low activity", so thumbs up for setting a successful contest like this one!

Congratulations to all contestants. Can we expect a new challenge in 2013? A five liner perhaps Cool

Remarkably almost everyone opted for a game, merely two tools and one demo were submitted. The allowance of a media file was truely a good move.

Yea, and the reason I brought it up back then was really simple: the traditional oneliners from magazines were technically interesting but looked like nothing. So, while keeping the idea of compact code up, you could as well make it look good by using a media file.

Some of these entries really have surprising looks!

I wonder whether this challenge currently has the right balance.. is ten lines enough, or would 15 or 20 lines be better? (not much a fan of specifications degradation myself). Is one media file (gfx, usually) enough, or would two be better? If contestants find the balance (or an upgraded balance) okay, I wouldn't mind doing this challenge again.

Getting a bit off-topic here, but one does notice that the media file is used for graphics. Nobody used it for music. Although you probably need a assembly replayer for it.

Ten lines is ok for me. More lines do allow games to be coded with more exception rules in the gameplay. On the other hand, being forced to squeeze it into 10 lines is also a challenge Smile

My comment-suggestion... because most of them are unplayable in normal MSX's except in turbo R, might we consider use Kun Basic as default? I think this would increase the quality and variety probably the lines too but for sure it worth.

Indeed, music would be a wee bit tricky as you'd need an external player, unless you can really create a simple player in BASIC and then read out note data from that media file, think e.g. of ON INTERVAL. But more concretely, you could store maps in that media file. Think of maze games 'n such. So, maybe a 'non-code content' file would be an even better description.

Yes you are right, but we can see that the entries basically use FX.
