The #msxdev Compo 2012 registration deadline was set to November 30th 2012. Therefore it is now time to present the final entries:

  • GameCast Entertainment enters the competition with Burner Burst, a game for MSX1 32kb RAM.
  • GameCast Entertainment also enters the competition with Baruko, a game for MSX1 128kb RAM.
  • TNI is participating with Third Screen, an MSX2 demo with MSX-MUSIC music.
  • Infinite enters the compo with Kingfisher, a Knightmare/Hinotori-style shooter for MSX with MSX-DOS, 128kb RAM and Gfx9000.
  • Flying Bytes submits No Pressure, an old school scroll and logo demo with MSX-MUSIC/MSX-AUDIO music, being an ode to the Dutch MSX scene in the 90s.
  • syn is contributing Barebone Bullets, a shooting game for basic MSX2.
  • Aetherbyte enters the competition as well with an RPG called Inferno for MSX2 128kb VRAM.
  • Darkstone joins in with Pixiedust, an autoscrolling maze game written for MSX2 128kb VRAM.

All in all, this is a great line-up! The deadline for the projects to finish is December 31st 2012 23:59 GMT+1. We will have to wait until the first week of January 2013 to actually see the results. By then, the entries will be made available to the public.

Inferno isn't an RPG. It was planned to be an action RPG, but is leaning more towards straight up action/arcade.

You can see the latest screenshots on Aetherbyte.com, or find Aetherbyte on facebook and look there!

Other contests have a fixed deadline where people can submit their games and thats it. Eg: send game before the date of xx.xx.xxxx

#msxdev compo on the other hand had a registration deadline on 30th of november. After registration, all contestants have one month to finish their entry(s) for which a submission deadline of 31th of december exists, followed by a voting round to decide the winner(s)

The entries are there :
http://msxbanzai.tni.nl/compo/entries.html

Unfortunaly most of them are not in ROM or DSK version and many game manuals are missing.

BARUKO : it does not seem to be the good version : the ROM does not work and the DSK intro displays BARUCO, contrary to BARUKO as on this 'final' video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0zruHcaXp8

Sorry to report here, but the official website does not have feedback options and IRC is not my cup of tea.

What do you mean "unfortunately most of them ar enot in ROM or DSK version"? Are you not a MSX user?
As for manuals, there is no requirement for manuals or whatever, so nothing is "missing".
If the participant in question did not think a manual was necessary, c'est ca.

Also there is important info on #msxdev Compo main page, so it would be nice if you would link to that.

As for Baruko/Baruco. This is what was sent in by GameCast as their entry. If you don't like it, complain to them.

As for feedback options, the #msxdev Compo has a specific e-mail address.

I don't speak for myself, but for some users of emulators. They all don't know how to create a DSK file and/or add the missing MSX-DOS files, how to unzip LZH files, but obviously, you seem to ignore that. Remaining in the pure MSX approach is not the way for new generations using emulators.

GuyveR800 wrote:

Be patient, I present first the games on MSXdev in the presumed order of their submitting. Then another news will make the conclusion about the contest with infos about the procedure to judge the entries. The demos will only be mentioned on MSXdev, because MSXdev (the original contest) is only about games, but I'll present the demos on MSXblue with videos made with blueMSX.

@mars200you: all good emulators support directory mounting, so unpack files somewhere, drag and drop onto emulator, WORKS!
If an emulator does not make it easy to use MSX, fix the emulator, don't release products you can't fucking use on a real MSX...

Yes, Inferno is not complete. This is what happens when you only work on a game for ~3 months with little MSX experience.

You can read the basic description of the game at www.aetherbyte.com/msx_inferno.html

The heartbeat is your health bar. You have a jump and attack button. The goal is to find the way out. It's fairly simple. I guess I probably should have included a manual. I didn't think it was necessary.

Greetings for your game! It looks very good. I like the large multicolor enemies, are they SW sprites?
The closest thing I remember on msx2 is Rastan Saga, where enemies are jerky and flickering
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IJ_EKTlgzg
It deserves to be finished. There is a little pause at each game start, do you unpack compressed graphic in that while?
I'd add few lines of text intro to be shown in that while, in order to tell a bit of story or scenario.

Yeah, they are software sprites. The pause is definitely graphics decompression, and I have been tossing around some ideas for a loading screen. I will probably just put the level number/name.

I will definitely be finishing Inferno, provided the overall reception from everyone is good, but I have a PC-Engine project that I need to get back to and finish ASAP. I put it on hold to work on Inferno for the contest. :)

After that, I will go back to Inferno. The engine is mostly all set and just needs some tweaks. After that the bulk of what is needed is enemy AI for the rest of the enemies in the game and music.

Fair enough. I totally forgot about that rule, and apparently so did everyone else.
Since most participants were coding hard until the last minute, it's not a bad thing to be a bit lenient for a first edition.

You know Artrag, complimenting people's work while calling someone else (Read: the extremely helpful contest coordinator) a {moderated} really isn't very productive.

Also, I definitely forgot about the manual requirement for the game entry. I was too caught up in making the giant colorful sprites move around and look awesome.

Though, If you need a manual for Inferno, I don't know what to tell you. Do you need a manual for Maze of Galious or DSIV? Probably not. There are two buttons possible in Inferno. Try them both. Cool

That's also my opinion for a first edition. I should even add that generally demos don't require a manual, because almost all you need to enjoy a demo is in the scrolling text. So maybe something to be adapted for next edition.

Yes, getting bullied and lies spread about you on a public site with a non-deletion policy for 8 years straight(!) is really comparable to a random comment on a shoutbox of a site that does not get 60.000 visitors per month*.

Maybe if ARTRAG would've been kind FOR ONCE, but all he ever said in relation to me was offensive and repeating the same old guyver800-bashing this site is famous for. I already have to tolerate the slanderous things this site has in its archive, and you are crucifying me for defending myself in a very small way.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Encouraged by several MRC moderators/admins I've carefully tried to contribute to this site again in the past few months, but every post I made resulted in bashing. You people need to look into what my real contributions to this site were, instead of mindlessly repeating the liars and trolls.

Until you guys take the TIME to learn about the history with an OPEN mind, and stop the mindless and senseless bullying, my only option is ignore this site again.

Artrag, it's a chatroom. It's people chatting, often about things that aren't going on IN the chatroom.

In that instance, I believe it was in reference to this thread, most notably the part where you didn't know what keys/joystick buttons to press for Inferno and stated that it needed a manual.

I assumed the game was pretty straightforward and obvious.

and, you can't play the victim if you're slinging insults and being a jerk about this stuff. Do you punch people and then complain when you get punched back?

I didn't think so.

@Arkhan I think you missed the time line of events. After I've asked how to use weapons, that guy has posted his stupid remarks, and after my complain he posted on banzai his nice "update" .
So it is exactly in the opposite way.
My questions were neutral, he started stupid comments and, at neat but my polite reaction, he posted on his site a personal offense. As you can see he is totally reverting the facts, I would say it is typical for him (and for some kind of pathology).

@Guy I do not care what was you history/contribution/whatever nor I do care if you love MRC or hate it: reread this thread (just this thread) without prejudices and delete your "update" on banzai. Actually, I already know you will not do that, so this request is just for the sake of completeness, to not leave anything unattempted.

Van Arkhan

It's not in the exact opposite way. What you said is exactly what I said.

You don't know what to do in a game--->Get called dumbass--->You complain --->It gets changed.

You realize you did your own fair share of instigation, right? I also believe you did this BEFORE realizing you'd been called a dumbass on a different site's IRC shout updates.
