Tiles and sprites

Hi,

Is it illigal to use tiles and sprites of any MSX game and use it for my own games?
I dont tend to sell them but maybe I want to put them online for others to play.

Anybody know something about this?

Wrong place to ask such questions. For me, and most MSX users, it is ok.
Foremost, if you look at early 80s arcade games, you will notice that almost all of them used the same font, usually called the NAMCO font. But it was used by all the companies. And Karoshi is still using it!

I guess that nobody will sue you for such thing, but who knows

Uh.. I think this is simply the generic copyright law .. if you use something from someone else.. you've to ask permission.

I don't know the details about freeware stuff etc...

btw.. why not make your own tiles/sprites? .. always feels better.. (and is more fun to do)

It is illegal, yeah. Ofcourse if you're going to use them for an MSX game it's not likely that anyone would care. If it's for a PC remake it really depends. If you were to make a Metal Gear remake it would certainly be more of a potential problem than if you were to make a Circus Charlie remake... But, in all cases, it is indeed a violation of copyright law...

I tend to agree more with Wolf_, make your own goddawm sprites and tiles. It's not that difficult to do and there are great tools to make them. That's what MSX still is all about to me: make your own stuff.

But I would like to make my own, and I tried.. but trust me... they are really bad.
I am a programmer not a graphics artist.
And if there is a great tool, anybody mind to give me the name of it?

On MSX, DD-Graph (also known as AGE(.COM)) is the best tool for tile-based graphics. If you want to use hardware sprites, DD-Graph also comes with a sprite editor (called SPE5 IIRC) for multi-color sprites.

If you really need to rip graphics, because you suck and you can't find someone that sucks less than you , then rip graphics from other systems than MSX, that will be less conspicuous

I guess it's not legal but truly if it's just for your own amusement and not for commercial purpose, who cares... If you're ready to assume the unlikely comments/complains from the original maker (tho I wonder who would mind after 20 years or so to see his sprites re-used).

Of course it's always better to make original stuffs but if you're just a programmer, and there is noone to help you make GFX, why bother spending days drawing ugly sprites when you could spend more time on what you're good at, that is programming.
