Event Eleven - the day after

We can safely say that Event Eleven was a blast! We had a lot visitors, and the amount of demonstrations, quizzes and lotteries we had in store certainly have matched with the impressive size of the crowd. At 16.00 we opened the doors and saw people already waiting.. like the good old days of the Tilburg and Zandvoort fairs.

The activities that took place during the afternoon and evening:

  • Music Quiz - An orchestral 23 minute symphony made by Wolf which contains eleven tunes from famous MSX games by Konami, Falcom, Compile and Micro Cabin. Evergreens, songs everyone knows, but somewhat to our surprise it turned out not everyone could come up with all the game titles, hence: a real quiz. Afterwards a few lucky winners were drawn who received T-shirts with imprints from Konami's Metal Gear and Castlevania.
  • First lottery - Donated pens and T-shirts from Konami were given away.
  • Deva presentation. Robert Vroemisse and Norakomi gave a preview of the upcoming Deva game, a platformer with multilayers, somewhat a mix of Psycho World and Fantasm Soldier 2. Robert has put some emphasis on the graphics which are very detailed and vast, despite using tile mode.
  • MOAM presentation. John Hassink talked about the history of MOAM, about its roots, about MSXdev, and about its destination. The game certainly looks like a lot of fun, with a touch of Indiana Jones.
  • Presentation of the new MSX.ORG website by Sander and Jorrith (Jorito). For two and a half years in the making our visitors now finally had the chance to see what's coming. We hope you like what's coming as much as our visitors did yesterday.
  • Project Melancholia. It has been a buzz for a while, but finally it was exposed yesterday. Sama has been working hard with Max Iwamoto and Rene Lourens to make a new English translation of Konami's smash hit SD Snatcher. This translation will feature the story as it was intended. The whole translation project certainly gained appreciation from the audience.
  • Moonsound Music Studio (open stage) - Towards the end of the evening GuyveR800 explained this new utility: a refurbished MBWave/MBFM with a lot of added functionality. The ultimate goal is to finally support all this Moonsound cartridge technically has to offer.
  • Polka 2 (open stage) - Finally, Infinite's Edwin Velds gave a brief demonstration of Polka 2; a large graphics tool. Multi platform, fully integrated, lots of importers and meant to provide tools for about any MSX game imaginable, with support for MSX1, MSX2, V9990 and basically any other video chip since Polka2's architecture is generic and open.
  • Second lottery - In this final part of our event, cool sponsored goodies were given away. Canvas prints of SD-Snatcher, Arabic MSX machines, Konami T-shirts and more..
  • During the day, The C-men Julian van Aalderen enjoyed us with chiptunes and great retro visuals.

It's been an amazing event, and we think it's also been an interesting new concept... perhaps an excellent test... for more? People enjoyed the served oriental soup, vegetables and sushi. Luckily we managed to keep all the drinks and food for free. While initially we'd announced to only use the Gallery section of Dokzaal, we actually got to use the large venue behind it as well. It meant we actually had a nice presentation room with a specially constructed steampunk theatre which was assembled for our event by French artist and co-host Cedric. Merci beaucoup!

A few more words of appreciation are in place. We would like to thank specifically the organisation of the Plantage Doklaan, our cook Elly, our VJ The C-Men, the cosplay girls Mashira and Malou van Doorn for their Bubble Bobble act (and a venue full of soapy bubbles, funny and hilarious at times). Cynthia Postma provided a nice cake, for which especially Cedric would say merci, since he 'took care of the cake'. Also we'd like to thank Abdullah al Swaikh, who has not only translated the interface of our new site to Arabic but also flew over from the United Arabic Emirates to join our party and brought with him Arabic MSX machines for the lottery. Bas Kornalijnslijper also receives our appreciation for providing an extra lottery prize: a service or product from Bas worth 50 euro. Konami, our main sponsor, certainly needs to be thanked for providing us with goodies, also Ronnie van der Kolk (RKLOK) who provided us with one of his Arcade Cabinets that plays MSX games.

Finally, we need to thank all the people who have given interesting demonstrations, and of course those of you who have taken the effort to come over to our party and made it a success - like TheWhipMaster who drove all the way from France with his girlfriend. If you have made any photos or videos please consider to also publish those on msx.org. We want to make a great photo album but we need your help so we can select the best photos to put online. Please send them to downloads@msx.org

Yes this could be a new start of the old MSX fairs. Make it more presentation targetted, let people do their talk about new products , ideas, code, show video's etc. Then maybe booths could be used as an additional, but certainly not the prime target.
The event itself was great , thumbs up for the organization Cool

Hopefully we'll see the new MSX.ORG soon Wink

Agreed, the concept is cool and fits the needs of today's MSX users. So it seems. I had a good time, but I totally missed that space-cake. oO
Great sounds and vids from c-men, loved it.

And the question of the evening; "when will it be ready?" certainly counts for mrc too. this year... hmm...

cheerio!

When will MRC2k11 be up and running? Consider this: Jorito longs for a bit of a break after over two years, so it certainly won't be long, or he'll collapse..! ^^

Great party, great people, great presentations, ehhh...... Great!

One of the greatest things about the party was that you could finally meet the person behind the nickname. Had a lot of great conversations with other MSX freaks. Let's do it again in the future.

I enjoyed the evening and found it indeed cool to meet some of the people 'behind' the nicknames. Unfortunately I had to leave in the middle of the event due to a previous commitment, so I missed to second halve of the evening. I would like to note that, in my opinion it would have been better to give the presentations a less formal character. For example, dont put up a tight schedule and 30 chairs, but just a few bar-tables and stands were people can relax, chat and enjoy the company. I dont mean everyone should have his or hes own stall like a fair, because having a centre stage that looks well works.
Also if the presentors had microphones, they could have been understood by everyone.

Overall I think the kind of meeting has potential! BUT, I also think it needs work to make it more casual and perhaps interesting to non-msx'ers like girlfriends and/or wifes Smile

Finally: (sorry for all the critial notesSmile I was _very_ suprised to see the old website still up the next day! I thought this was a LAUNCH party?

Cheers!

Please note that organizing an event like this takes months. And we didn't want to wait with organizing the party before finishing the website. We're all a bunch of hobbyists so I really don't get the critical comments. It's not like we are some real company with employees. It took Steve five months to sell the first iphone after the launch party and that's a company. So I think a few weeks delay is reasonable.

Well, me too, I expected to see the new site the day after the party, but it was just a misunderstanding as Wolf_ has already explained. I think that there is nothing bad on waiting a few weeks more if the result is good, which I'm sure it is. Smile

Hi guys, just a small note to let you know that I think the new stuff is AWESOME. The site, the new SD Snatcher translation, the event concept, ... Just a shame I couldn't be there to witness it in first person.

Congrats @ all, I'll be looking forward to seeing the new website online!

I would like to thank and congratulate the crew for organizing this succesful event. Even someone like me who never went to a fair/event before felt right at home Wink It was nice to meet the people behind the usernames, and obviously the various presentations were highly enjoyable. I have to mention that the open stage had some interesting stuff that I did not expected, since I was very curious about both the projects that were talked about/shown. Also the games that were shown on a big beamer looked even better than on youtube! Big smile The translation projects were good news and the MRC2k11 presentation was very well done.

All in all, like I said in my other post, I had a great time.

You really want the truth? Are you sure you can handle the truth Sander?

Muffie suffers from the same disease of John Nash. Lionelritchie is actually his personal doctor.

But, me and all my great friends around here, can hardly believe that you'll take that as the true...
