Having sold more than 50% of the initial batch of One Chip MSX computers available to the Western market earlier this week, the indicator at the One Chip MSX website of Bazix now shows they are almost sold out completely. In their One Chip MSX newsletter, Bazix notes that the available stock might sell out before November 21st, advising people interested in this new MSX computer to place their pre-order as soon as possible.

Yesterday, MSX Association announced that production of the Japanese edition of the One Chip MSX has just begun, and that distribution is to start at the end of November. For the Japanese market, a total amount of 5,000 One Chip MSX computers will be produced. Most of these have been sold on pre-order at D4 Enterprise, while a limited amount will become available on general sale in December. With this, the new MSX computer is officially, and finally there.

For those who have been living in a cave the last few months, the One Chip MSX is a brand new MSX computer implemented in a single Altera Cyclone FPGA chip. By default, the One Chip MSX is configurated as a boosted MSX2 configuration, with 1MB RAM, MSX-MUSIC, SCC+ Kanji ROM, and a FAT16 compatible, hot-swappable SD/MMC card slot connected via a MegaSCSI interface. A complete overview of its specifications can be found over here.

"With this, the new MSX computer is officially, and finally there."

Yes, seems incredible, but we all expected through the years a NEW MSX3, but anyway, we've finally done it.

I apologize, but the same unanswered questions rise in my mind again and again:

What is the level of accuracy of the 1chip with respect to the original HWs?
Will Bazix continue to support the 1chip with new free releases of the fimware and bug fixes?

I ordered the 1chip, and I am confident that everything will go fine, but I feel that some more info about those topics could help more users to decide in the same direction.

Artrag - I'll receive the 'release' firmware soon, after which I'll be able to do some accuracy tests. At the moment the OCM does not run all, but it does run most MSX2 software. Doing an "emulator comparison tests" only makes sense with the 'release' firmware.

Of course, Bazix is to continue support for the OCM, releasing both compatibility and feature improvements (which can be developed by either the current or other/extra/community developers).

Btw, are the USB ports enabled (although I know that still aren't functional)? I could charge the iPod using the One Chip MSX and save some money in this :P

Now that we are sure the One Chip will become reality, how long should it take to produce the "european" batch ? I mean, will Santa Claus be very, very nice this year ? I know I should question Bazix, but everybody is, I think, interested by the answer. Tongue

Edit : I just come back from Bazix website ; obviously, I can't read LOL! Sorry.

Hello Bazix,

I have already preordered my OCMSX, but I'd like to know how long will it take from the time that computers sell out until they are produced and then sent to people...

Actually is to HAVE money enough when you pretend to charge for it :)

THANKS!

Dear David,

We are aiming to deliver in spring 2007. This means we will send you an invoice for your pre-order late 2006 or early 2007.

Kind regards,
Bart Schouten.

Spring is from 21th of March 2007 till 21th of June 2007. So why does everyone have to pay so early? Question

According to their own agreement they will deliver within one month after payment. So one either the delivery period or the invoice period is not entirely realistic.

The mail posted above only gives a rough estimation. After November 21st, when the pre-order period at Bazix closes, people who pre-ordered the One Chip MSX and/or those who subscribed to the One Chip MSX mailinglist will receive further information on production, shipment and payment status. Bazix will start sending invoices at a reasonable point in time, before delivery of the OCM starts. In other words: please wait for further details! ^_^

Did you notice that the OneChip MSX is "sold out" at the Bazix site?
I wonder how many preorders have been placed... Question

From the Bazix site:
Unfortunately, we do no longer accept pre-orders. If you are interested in acquiring a One Chip MSX, please join our One Chip MSX newsletter. Although there are no plans to produce a second batch of One Chip MSX computers in the near future, you will be the first to know when a second batch is to be produced.
