Ok I just made an overview of all the grapx that appear in the first level for sc4 16 colors.
As far as game play it's possible to port this 100% to the msx, so you get exactly the same feel as the super nintendo version.
Grapx will be less good, but gameplay is more important.
Mostly the diagonal objects (see picture) will not look so good.
Anyone willing to make some adjustments to these grapx please do so.

@Daemos:
Do you want to make an exact port, or do you want to include some original levels ?
Imo it would be nice to make it a little different, so that you actually play new levels.

A game using the same techniques than Mario Islands is the (still) unreleased Tam Tam Twins by MsxKun. I've seen the prototypes running and I think is pretty impressive. Its engine seems perfect for this kind of projects.

And again, how well would perform the already finished vscreen engine?. The Kuru Kuru Kururin demo shows an excellent potential to make SC4 platform scrolling games.

@ARTRAG

it looks like mario does 3 pixels / frame:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJmZyGKGgoE 2:05 - 2:18
I count 9 screens in 13 seconds = 0.69 screens/s ; *256 = 177 pixels/s; /60 = 2.95 pixels/frame

What do you think about my posting about running the cpu in parallel to get 4 pixels/frame ?

That figure is achieved by just letting the blitter do one copy per frame and the cpu the other halve of the work, without coding differential stuff.

Of course MSX2´ers must have new games too, but what I meant, of course was just a suggestion, that if someone´s gonna make SCREEN 4 MSX2 game, then it could be possible to make MSX(1) version too, which partially uses the same engine. So, two games for the MSX world, not bad, me thinks. Smile
With all respect, and with regards to what you're thinking - that philosophy goes with certain types of games.
But... you may be overestimating the exchangability between screen 2 and screen 4. Smile
There's actually some hurdles on the way to make a program flexible to both. Ask Huey or ARTRAG how much fun they are having adapting all the MOAM stuff. Wink

About the MSX world -
If there is a place on the whole entire planet, underground or in the clouds, where they can not execute and play MSX2 games, then I'm Elvis Presley, and I've just returned to sing you some nice songs.
And I'm a pepperoni pizza, too! Big smile
Leave it to the Finnish to plug in an MSX Turbo R on the North Pole!

Seriously: I think that's a very nice graphics reworking which you did.
I said it before to you - I think you have great talent in design, and I really, really hope to see one (or more!) games come out of it! Smile

Why not make it with the Gfx9000 or the VSU? Tongue

In my idea it would not be an exact clone. There would be some original levels but also levels/creatures of own design. It would be a true MSX only super mario world.

i will drop you a mail as soon as possible.

@MäSäXi WOW the tiles are smoothscrollable Big smile That's the kind of dreams I like Big smile

I want to remind of http://jf.peer.name/msx/smoothscroller.zip

Enter your dream into tst.gif, run mk.bat (need a java installed), wait till converter prints "saved" in the shell, close window, insert msxfiles directory as diskette.

Then see it smoothscrolling on the MSX 1 :D

But anyway, I would be happy enough for having SCREEN 1 smooth scrolling super mario world. :) I altered original sketch a bit to make it look like SCREEN 1, there may still be some wrong coloured pixels and I don´t mean that this example could scroll smoothly without colour clash in SCREEN 1, but you can see what I mean. :)

Well the engine wants no "jpg", similar tiles must be identic pixels or memory explosion.

The screen 2 engine wont do 60fps, but even with many tiles it beats an 8x8 scroller whose fps are slowed by the 8x8 grid. Still one would maybe do it as a horizontal-only smoothscroller with vertical scroll going on a 8 pixel granularity.

With using halve of vram as cache (8 scroll positions cached like Pippols, coding this is still on the todo list) up to 16 chars in every charset the thing runs 60fps. So it might be possible to do the sketch in 60fps in a screen 2 game! Still with the ability that the whole level consists of much more than the maximum 32 chars of vram caching games (I think malaika goes in 32 chars?), as the dynamic charloader can add things.

Still in the learning fase so I don't know how usefull I can be.send me an email and we'll make this game in no time. It's easy dude. ( bartfuture at gmail dot com )

@norakomi horray! Big smile I exclude mario from my screen 5 bitching, go for it!

A technical idea: MSX2 can have 8 charsets in vram?
Then background layer parallax goes by selecting one of those 8. This would have only horizontal parallax, but huge masses.

John H.. I do understand, that single screen sc4/sc2 and smooth scrolling sc4/sc2 are surely different things, it´s surely easier to make single screen platform/arcade adventure game which runs on both sc2 and sc4, depending on machine which runs it. But I am just making my little wishes, who knows if somebody gets interested in some case, perhaps not in this case, but with some other game at least. Smile And nice to hear that there is one more Elvis imitator in this world! Wink

Thank you, even that was not too hard, as I had original sc4 sketch already. Wink
