If you abandon smooth scroll it will not be super mario any more and you will end up with the same Zemina version and you could call it Super bio boy as well Wink

I guess someone is getting the same idea here to code this game for MSX. Too bad I am still in the path of learning.

Why not making it so that parralax scrolling only works if the right HW is there??

@MäSäXi: Come on!

80's was time of playing and learning... 90's was time of MSX2 games and demos... 00's was time of MSX1

Could 10's be now finally time of MSX2+/MSX tR? According to "how many turbo-r machines are sold ?"-poll we still own these machines, right?

@norakomi: MSX1 is so last season, show the true colors of MSX, go for it!

+1000 :P

I agree with you, too much emphasis has been put on MSX1, it's time we focus on MSX2, MSX2+ and TR.

I think I've showed that on a plain msx2 we can have smooth horizontal scrolling and vdp borders in screen 5 and in screen 8 too.

https://sites.google.com/site/testmsx/screen-8-smooth-horizontal-scrolling
https://sites.google.com/site/testmsx/Home/smooth-horizontal-scrolling

In screen 8 the horizontal speed is 1 pixel per frame
In screen 5 the horizontal speed can be both 1pixel or 2 pixels per frame
Vertical srolling is also possible.

In both modes the scrolling code takes less than the 20% of the frame
Anyone willing to try?

i know artrag,
but for a game like supermario world you can only use sc4.
the player can walk, run and sprint,
so the screen needs to be able to scroll at different speeds,
varying from 1 pix per frame to 3 or 4 pixels per frame.
nothing works better than sc4 in that situation.

Also if the game doesnt NEED sc5 for its grapx (supermarioworld's
grapx are all pretty simple, the mountains the blocks and clouds)
then even more reason to use sc4.I guess someone is getting the same idea here to code this game for MSX. Too bad I am still in the path of learning.you kidding me ? you had the idea of coding THIS game ? what a coincidence. Well, shall we work together then ?Why not making it so that parralax scrolling only works if the right HW is there??a parralax version of supermario world is only possible using grapx 9000. I myself don't have one, so I'm not interested in coding for it either. Next to that I don't even know anything about it, so I CANT code for it.

In fact certain parallax effects seem perfectly doable in tile mode, provided you respect the limited horizontal colour possibilities of the parallax (non-HW-scrolling) layer and avoid parallax on non-straight edges (e.g. you can probably get perfectly scrolling clouds and other backgrounds behind the fully vertical objects and have artifacts around slopes or round edges). It doesn't get C64 quality though, let alone dedicated multi-layer graphics chips.

I don't matter how it will look. For my part it could also be monochrome (black&white) as long as it has the same game play as the original version.

The rest is non-added eye candy value Wink

That's why almost all ports fail. They focus on how SM looks. Not how it plays.

I fully agree. Many (S)NES games have excellent playability and control of the main character. That needs to be implemented first. No need for a port that has crappy speed control or jumping that doesn't feel right.

Not that you can't do nice graphics alongside good playability of course, and at least smooth scrolling will add somewhat to the playability of such a platform game.

Talking about black&white platform games, Tower of Heaven seems like an excellent candidate for MSX porting. Can you do that next, Norakomi? Wink

So?

I like "last season" stuff more than "next season" stuff. :) :D

@masaxi, screen 2?? I guess you made à miss typo and mean screen 5?

Yes, I saw that, but I also saw this:

16 colors, sc4
