Pengo MSX demo

Let's face it: SEGA had a hedgehog, MSX has a penguin. Every once in a while, this animal pops up in an MSX game, most of them by Konami. Paxanga joined the penguin parade by hiring a red penguin to lead the game Pengo. A demo of Pengo has been made available at Paxanga's web site. The demo is limited to two stages and only one player, also, it has no extras. True penguin addicts out there can grab the popcorn and enjoy the fun!

It looks and plays perfectly, just like the arcade. Very polished work.

An optional SCC support would be lovely though, as the music would sound very close to the arcade version. It can't be hard to implement, since the current music doesn't seem to use PSG noise or envelopes and the tone/volume registers are very similar for PSG and SCC.

sd_snatcher, what you say is very true.
Actually, one of the SCC waves developed for use in the MOAM soundtrack is very similar to the main instrument used in the Pengo arcade version.
It's up to Juan Luis for that matter, dunno if he wants to implement it. Smile

Thx, but too late, only 1 week for testing left... oO And no SCC replayer... Also, ROM won't have SCC chip either...

Don't get me wrong, but... Does hobbyist projects have such rigid deadlines? Is it like you would loose the "time to market" point? Smile

And no SCC replayer... Also, ROM won't have SCC chip either...

As the differences between the chips are low, it shouldn't be hard to modify the existing replayer to also support SCC. It's a matter of initialize the proper waveforms and changing the register-write routine to fit the SCC. Come on, you had much more work getting the game up to the point it is now. Smile

And having no SCC on the cartridge is no excuse: all it needs is to use the SCC connected in another slot. Smile Info on how to detect the SCC can be found here

1- MSX RU. Do you want to wait until next one, on December? Tongue
2- I'm tired of it after 4 years, it has to be finished. It is finished. If i don't finish it now, i won't hurry, so it will be delayed again.. and then i'll want to add more stuff.. then in December it won't be finished either... then i'll pass all the year without finishing it or any other game.
3- We survived without SCC many years. One cartridge appart is an ugly solution.
4- I'm tired.. i'm tired.. i'm tired...
5- Same as 4. Infinite.

oh! and 6 - Big smile PSG musics made by DemonSeed sounds already great!! He made a great job! Tongue

Actually, I never knew why Konami dropped the Penguin as a simbol over the years... It used it in some msx games (even in Game Master) but when she moved to other platforms, the penguin was gone... Sega has Sonic, Nintendo has Mario, why Konami didn't keep the penguin?

Hehe, maybe because Penguins belongs to mankind Cool They're universal, not only a symbol of one company.

Btw, about SCC, gonna start messing with it to see how it works. Will be useful for next games.
But then, I'll need to keep bugging certain musician... Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

Question: PSG2SCC would be useful Question

@MsxKun

You're right, I do agree with all of your arguments. And the main factor about a hobbyist project like this is that it must be fun. When were tired of a project that got too long, this means it's time for a new one.

The game is great anyway, and you deserve many congratulations for such an impressive effort!

Ty all.
Yup, it's time for new games. And i'm taking a look to SCC info. It really looks easy, so probably next game will use it. Thx!
