The Japanese SCREEN0-12 image compression suite Bargain has been updated once again. This time the machine code was optimized just a bit further, scraping off 4 bytes in size. An English user manual is now included as well. On the Bargain Website you can download several demo disks of Bargain in action.

Finally did some compression testing on some of my game graphics. It compresses a good 10 to 30% better than pletter/bitbuster does. Impressive! I'd still like to see the decompression time comparison though. But that will be difficult because pletter decompresses to ram. Which brings me to what this tool is really missing.

Currently its use doesn't extend much beyond keeping a picture collection on your msx. What would really help is a pc based compressor that can compress rectangular areas of graphics (arbitrary size or at least in steps of 16 pixels). That way you can include it in your cross platform build system.

Wow, I did not know that the compression routine was this good! It does probably come at the cost of some speed Wink
However, the complete source code (SjASM) is included -- so that seems like a good starting point for creating Bargain compatible tools, hm?

Great Bargain! Is it possible to write libraries for C and Pascal languages?
Very interesting to use Bargain to compress screen5 graphics. You can put a large amount of graphics in a DSK or ROM.
