On May 20th, ASCII started taking pre-orders on the new One Chip MSX. Within a week, 1000 devices were pre-ordered. It took almost 2 months before the 2000 milestone was reached. It looks like accomplishing the minimum amount of 5000 One Chip MSX computers required to make commercial production possible is going to be quite a challenge.
At the current rate of pre-orders, it looks like ASCII is not going to make it. However, with other MSX revival projects like the MSX Magazines and MSX Game Reader they managed to turn a slow start into quite a success.
Earlier today the odds were increased by the Dutch company Bazix, who opened up a One Chip MSX pre-order page, allowing people living outside Japan to obtain a One Chip MSX as well. Now that the One Chip MSX has become available worldwide, it will be interesting to see if and when the 5000 pre-order barrier can be accomplished.
