3D Road Fighters

It comes as no surprise that Konami, too, is riding the 3D wave by releasing new arcade cabinets with seat mounted 3D glasses. The name of the 3D game in question does grab the attention of the average classic gaming fan, as it's none other than the 1984 arcade classic Road Fighter, which was released on MSX in 1985. From the looks of it, the resemblance with the original game will not go much further than the name of the game and the use of brightly colored cars, such as a Nissan GT-R SpecV, Lancer Evolution X GSR, Ford GT, Audi R8, BMW’s Mini Cooper and the Toyota Vellfire van. Still, it's always nice to see a Konami remake of any of their classics. SD-Snatcher 3D, anyone?

I remember Midnight Run (Road Fighter 2) as it was the first PlayStation 1 game I ever played on an emulator (PSEmu Pro).

That game also felt nothing like the original (instead, you were driving laps in sports cars on the Tokyo Highway) and I can't say it was a good game either.

I bought Speed King (Konami) for PS1 in Japan (a kind of Wipeout) because it recreated Neo Kobe. Obviously 3D Road Fighters has nothing to do with MSX Road Fighter; the same goes for Speed King: nothing to do with MSX SD Snatcher ... Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

never played speed king (any good?)
it using neokobe as the racing backdrop seems at least a better homage than the game that just carried the name "roadfighter 2" as subtitle (no other references)

Seems it'd be fun to try and find all the references in the game (I did see a "Metalslave" ad)

can't say the racing itself looked superb, but that might be because there was lots of wall-hitting.

Never knew about speed king. Didn't see much references to neo kobe apart from the title screen. There are some in the "subliminal parts", like a warning from the neo kobe police to not drink and drive and a reference to the Neo Port Tower. The most interesting one was a message that says to buy a konami game if you have nothing to do, that they made games for 25 years and if you like simulation games you should check out Vandal Hearts. I sincerely doubt that subliminal message had an impact though.

On the tracks I can't make out much related stuff. On the first track there is a graphical billboard which reads Metal something (but can't make out the second part): probably metal slave. In various other places you see ads for Metalslave with the tagline: we who are like no others. Could also mean that some people from team metal slave worked on the game.
