It's the first of the month, so lets have a look at which files have been downloaded the most during the previous month. One month ago, right after our server move, we changed to a new method of counting the downloads, in an attempt to reduce the amount of false hits (bots, people clicking on a download link multiple times, etc.). With that change, we have set all counters back to zero again. Regular visitors of our statistics page are therefore not likely to spot any surprises in the list.

As usual, new game and demo releases such as Clopy, Miner machine and MSX Unleashed do very well in the top 10, while one of the recently released Russian MBM files, Anormal Activity, did well in the charts as well. The complete top 10 for April 2006 looks as follows:

  1. Clopy (179 downloads)
  2. Miner Machine (132 downloads)
  3. MSX Unleashed (99 downloads)
  4. 666 The Haunted House (83 downloads)
  5. Anormal activity (78 downloads)
  6. Rick Dangerous (56 downloads)
  7. Vampire killer (56 downloads)
  8. Bet your life (55 downloads)
  9. PCM Encoder (54 downloads)
  10. ROMLOAD (52 downloads)

Currently, our database contains 759 freeware downloads. If you'd like to share your productions with the MSX community, send them to downloads@msx.org. Happy downloading!

I think many people use it to try for themselves how good those samples can sound on MSX. However, it would be great if a developer or two (or more) would actually use this great tool in order to get neat samples in an MSX release (e.g. an MSXdev game).

msxdev is not really the place for it I think. It would cut into the 128k a bit too much. I'm sure we won't have space left for samples.

Almost true, but you can use RLE @11KHz with 1 psg transition per sample.

This provides lots of CPU time (only one transition each 90usec) and
about 5-6Kbyte/sec.

Spending 64Kbyte of ROM could give you about 12secs of audio effects

Especially for SFX, that's a -lot- of sampling space indeed.
