selios2000 has published a video footage on YouTube about the 35th MSX Users Meeting (colloquially known as RU) held last weekend in Barcelona, Spain. Two games in development got very good reviews from the audience:

  • Goonies 'R' Good Enough which will be available in a few months and will feature two versions in the same cartridge, one for MSX1 and the other one for MSX2/2+/tR. According to Ramones only about 100 units are going to be produced due to the availability of SCC chips. The PSG-SCC balance will be adjustable
  • Moon Over Arba Minch. A new platform game by ARTRAG, DemonSeed and Huey. It also will include an SCC chip and will come in a 4Mbit MegaROM cartridge

You can take a look here at the list of groups that attended the meeting.

According to Ramones only about 100 units are going to be produced due to the availability of SCC chips.

Why not support an external SCC? I guess everybody nowaday owns an SCC cart already. Well at least people who buy/collect games.
Its cheaper and easier to produce more items that way.

He said that an external SCC would not be possible due to programming problems (slows down the game)

Hmm perhaps.
My knowledge about that issue is limited. But I have been told that it wouldn't be a real problem.

For our project we are trying to implement an external SCC. So if there is a success I'll let Ramones know asap.

How hard it would be to use a new sound chip? I'm pretty sure there are alternatives on the market and it wouldn't be the massacre of the original scc konami cartridges right?

Huey: Yeah, it shouldn't be a problem, Montana John supports an external SCC/SCC-I too.

Can't we just plug Yamaha's YMF262 or YMF278? Or even an Yamaha YMU786? those are easily found on the market. It's not just a matter of plugging it correctly and make them accessible through some ports? I'm pretty sure new music artists would also be able to create good content?

Making an external SCC work is not all that hard. It only takes a few cycles to switch slots. Not something that would likely wreck the timing of a game. However, you may run into a problem if you didn't design for it from the start because switch slots hides two 8k banks from access, while the internal SCC only hides one.

I worked around that by using extra ram for the tune. Which I needed anyway since the tunes are ridiculously large. Tongue

Hmmm. is it possible that (without a slot expander) the game cart and scc cart are in the same slot (but in different sub slots)?

ExecROM does not patch the game, on the fly, to use SCC from an external slot?

Hi, you lot!
Smile

Thanks Huey for your offer: it's very kind of you and I'm always glad to see this generous behavior among coders.
Big smile

Now...

...the policy of Kralizec has been *quality* from the very beggining.

So, if we sell a product (vorsicht! not freeware! XD ) we want to achive best results. It's our duty.

The complete success, in our opinion, is to make a cartridge videogame that needs just a msx machine (ANY msx machine, in this unique case) to be enjoyed.

So you buy the game and insert it on your msx. And you can play it completely. Including all features, as SCC music.
No need to own a previous scc cartridge.

To make a long story short, we chose to develop complete products in the way any software company would do.
Wink
(when you pay you expect serious stuff, don't you? we do!)

About a new youtube video to show a little bit of the first generation version, just wait! It's comin' very, very soon.
We're working on it and want to get it ready asap.

Thanks to everybody for the feedback.
Smile

How about putting a small fpga on the cartridge and program an SCC into it? In that way, you can make as many cartridges with the game and with an SCC as you want.

I agree with the complete product policy. But, just for curiosity, it's not possible to use other sound chips? You're disassembling konami carts to get scc chips?

It sounded and looked like music changes everytime you change Goonie, is there own musical track for every Goonie? Smile

I was waiting to hear PSG tunes also and when there wasn´t one in MSX1 video, I meant to ask about PSG soundtrack, but since you revealed that there is SCC chip inside every cartridge, I guess there is no PSG soundtrack (except maybe PSG is part of SCC soundtrack?Smile). No, that is not a bad thing, but it just feel bit strange, MSX1 game which has music (and it is not Konami game) but there is NO PSG tunes. I, like others too, have learned to hear PSG! Smile

And now, no matter are you Kralizec guy or somebody else, please don´t get me wrong, I just wanna say, that I feel it somewhat very strange, as game is based on 1985 american movie, starring ordinary looking american kids and american bad guys, and this new game shows 1985AD american kids and baddies as 2000AD trendy spike haired japanese techno kids. It looks very strange to me. Eek! But of course it´s a matter of taste, and of course you designers can have your artistic view, of course. Smile But luckily, game looks more acceptable on MSX1 due it´s "inferior" graphics. Wink But anyway, game looks and sounds very well made on both MSX generations.

Congratulations for good job, Kralizec! Smile

By the way, was there possibility to adjust PSG/SCC balance in this cartridge?

If there is, does it give any help to Philips NMS 8250 ? Question Otherwise Goonies musics will sound very strange on my 8250 I afraid... oO
