Project "Hmm" preview

Project "Hmm" preview

Topic: Software
Tags: Moonblaster

After we made Moonblaster and its sources available for download, Finnish MSX fan NYYRIKKI started playing with the Moonblaster source code. His initial work was on making the sources compile, but NYYRIKKI's plans didn't stop there.

Currently work is underway on a new fun project, which has tentatively been dubbed Project "Hmm". The idea of this project is to use your voice or a real music instrument to enter notes in Moonblaster. Project Hmm uses the internal microphone of the Panasonic turboR computers for this. There are some changes planned to improve the voice recognition, but as can be seen in the preview video it already works quite well.

Apart from voice recognition support, NYYRIKKI also made some other improvements. One of these is support for all drives connected to the MSX in stead of just drives A and B. There are also tentative plans to implement proper DOS2 support and a rewrite of the loading system to pack the software, reduce the number of files needed and make Moonblaster run from both MSX-DOS and MSX-BASIC. Last but not least the sources were converted from Gen80 to XL2S' Sjasm to speed up development.

It is unclear if or when Project Hmm will be released, as the schedule is very open.
What do you think of this project? Let it know in the comments!

I'd love to have those sjasm compatible sources. I always wanted to add better (finer) speed contol and equal replay speed for 50 and 60Hz.

Wow! Is that Dr Hannibal Lecter listening to classical music? No, seriously, I saw the photo on mrc's news and I thought it was Mr Lecter enjoying music (well, Anthony Hopkins actually, but the gesture is somewhat characteristic). Sorry for the offtipic, I kno it's absurd and I don't mean to offend anybody. Wink

That's a really cool idea Cool I can't wait for the next step, when NYYRIKKI will implement brain wave recognition as then I will be able to make music Hannibal

Having the sources on something like github could improve collaboration between developers, each adding their own features. Smile

Anyway, awesome project from NYYRIKKI Big smile I really love the passion, joy and creativity he seems to put in his MSX activities.

It is quite difficult to get the right pitch usining your voice! Not all people can sing the correct pitch, this is quite an achievement! I don't think this is a joke..

No, I don't think this is s april fool's joke (it is 1. of april in Finland) - finns just tend to be sometimes a bit eccentric. LOL!

Ok, did some minor adjustments... There are still lot's of things to do, but if you want to test this anyway I now uploaded a current WIP version:

Few tips: Don't whistle, don't say "Laa", no need to yell... This is project "Hmm" for a reason. Just push space while saying "Hmm" and it works quite ok.

This seems to be harder than I expected... Music Module can input maximum @ 16KHz while I now sample @ 25KHz on MSX tR. This seems to make quite a huge difference in accuracy.

How ever I have now updated the download link (see previous comment) so that also MSX2/MSX2+ users who have Music Module can try this feature. As I said, it does not work too well ATM for Music Module, but maybe I can figure out something to make things better...

Long ago I disabled the mic in and the audio stream to the MSX... Haven't got a mic anymore... Don't remember my reasons actually... Too long ago... Otherwise I would have tried it for sure Smile

Breaking the limits: Practical tests have proven that I can kick Music Module sample rate up to 18KHz before Y8950 fails... Well... minor improvement (download updated) but still far from good enough... (Damn!)
