Guess what's back? The MSXdev'14 game development contest has been already announced and it is here again to give MSX developers the chance to learn and compete in one of the most famous MSX challenges ever!

The most important fact for this edition is, again, ROM size: this time things can become bigger, as any size will be accepted as long as it does not require a ROM mapper. Other aspects of the contest have been polished, so be sure to check the whole rules in this thread over at Karoshi forums. Anyway these are, in brief, the contest rules highlights:

  • Games should run on a plain MSX1 and be compatible with higher generations.
  • ROM format (from 8 to 48 KB), and 16KB RAM.
  • Vote system will be public at a Karoshi MSX Community voting thread, and users will be able to set points to every entry at different categories per game.
  • A second deadline for fixed versions has been set, for those presented games that requires so. Those fixed versions will be taken in account when judging the games.
  • Donate for the main prize! Be sure to check the donation thread at Karoshi MSX Community to contribute with your donation for the main prize!

From now on you have until 15th June to create your thread and upload your entry or to donate for the main prize. International developers are wanted, as we really missed them the last couple of MSXdev editions: every contest thread is written in English, and you can configure the boards in English by following the instructions of this thread, so don't be shy and join the MSX "fiesta": Everyone's invited!

I coded two command line tools to convert PCX images to MSX charsets and sprites. If you find yourself comfortable with a command prompt, you can give them a try Smile

I am looking more like an IDE, in the old times, I had an IDE of my own, running it in the real MSX1, so you can looks how the animations goes about sprites, deploy multiple charsets for screen2, and see how sprites looks being the background, plus some functions for creating / edit the map in a 2x2 tiles per map point. Is today something like that?, and then, all disk I/O for input output from/to disk.
