What games on MSX use "save games", and how does it look? Would be nice if there were some screenshots and/or videos from it. I'm thinking of this kind:

and not the "type-in-password-kind".

Let me know if there are any products you think has handled this very well - or even the opposite, if there are variants that do not meet your expectations.

Metal Gear 2 / SD Snatcher
Xak / Xak II / Tower of Gazzel / Fray / Illusion City
Ys / Ys II / Ys III / Dragon Slayer VI
Pumpkin Adventure II / III
Psycho World

I don’t think they generally do much more fancy than one or more save entries in a textual menu. Sometimes they show a few stats. In that sense there is a lot to learn from more modern UIs.

Personally I think it’s good to show the player level and total playtime, and maybe some additional stats like area name and money. This will allow you to correctly judge the most recent save game, and from how long ago older save games are in case you want to go back and redo a certain part. I like to have at least three save entries.

Bonus points if the most recently saved entry is highlighted by default. Not by the clock chip time, which is often not set correctly, but by tracking an ID that when saving is set to the highest ID of the existing savegames + 1. And additional bonus point if there is some graphic like an area icon or the characters in your party.

IMHO the best is to have multiple save options in a game.

One of the most standard ways for MSX is saving to disk or FM(PAC). Most Microcabin games use both of them. You can also add save to Panasonic Turbo-R built-in SRAM.

Another popular way to save is to cartridge FLASH memory since most new cartridges are FLASH-based. Examples would be Manbow 2 or DEVA. In this case, if you take cartridge with you and continue playing on another MSX, the save will travel with you too Smile

What I had in mind.

I found that Manbow2 is not sold anymore, but I could test the functionality on file-hunter.com Smile DEVA - not sure where I can get it.

DEVA is sold out AFAIK. But there is another game you can check...

You can look for source/ROM from this post. It will have all code that you need:
