I am going to try to figure this last time why these games are not working on my MSX2. If after this it still does not get resolved then I will officially play them on the emulator only. It seems my hardware configuration is not enough for the game to work. But before I do that let me list the games for you and the symptoms and what I did with my megaflashROM.

Thanks in advance.

The list of games are as follows:

1) Life on Mars: opfxsd lom.rom /k5 /u...it flashes, I enter boot screen of the game, it asks me for 60/50 Hz, it asks me for FM-Pac or Mono or OPl4 or Mono or some such..I select FM-Pac...I enter another splash screen then black screen then back to BASIC with Syntax Error

2) Rune Monster: opfxsd rmonster.rom /k5 /u...it flashes, I enter boot screen of the game, it asks me for 60/50 Hz, it asks me for FM-Pac or Mono or OPl4 or Mono or some such..I select FM-Pac...I enter another splash screen then black screen then back to BASIC with Syntax Error

3) Sector 888: opfxsd S888Eng.rom /k5 /u...it flashes, I enter boot screen of the game, it asks me for 60/50 Hz, it asks me for FM-Pac or Mono or OPl4 or Mono or some such..I select FM-Pac...I enter another splash screen then black screen then back to BASIC with Syntax Error

I am using MSX 2 Sanyo Wavy J23. Any advice in how to fix this issue please? I have carnivore 2 in slot 2 used to provide fm-pac for me.

So, these 3 games, all by the same author, all fail in the same way. Did you ask the author what could be going on?
The issue could probably be analyzed on openMSX, which emulates all the hardware you used.

Also, did you try without the Carnivore 2 inserted?
Did you try to run them on the Carnivore 2 instead of the MFR? (E.g. with SofaRun&gtWink

When I run the ROM file on the Sanyo Wavy 23 in openMSX directly, I also get the same symptom (only tried LOM). When I add extra RAM in slot 2, it works. So, I guess it needs more RAM. And apparently the RAM from your MFR and Carnivore 2 aren't found. Do you have RAM in your MFR?
Not entirely sure, but possibly the /U option disables the RAM in the MFR? But then again, the C2 should still provide 1024kB RAM. When trying, I did get the Carnivore 2 to boot instead of the ROM game, though.

The problem is that the Kai Magazine games require a memory mapper, and the Sanyo PHC-23J is a 64K RAM machine without a memory mapper. Memory mappers were common, but not yet fully standard for MSX2 machines.

The game will work if you insert a memory mapper. For example, if you have a MegaFlashROM with 512K RAM (that’s a memory mapper), load it into the MegaFlashROM without /u option, then the mapper will stay enabled. Or insert the Carnivore2 in another slot, it has a 1024K mapper.

How I found this out; I can reproduce the issue in openMSX on the Sanyo PHC-23J machine. When it returns to BASIC with the “Syntax Error in 2005” error, if you type “files” you can see the source files from the ROM disk. The line 2005 in question can be found in autoexec.bas, where it tries to call the music driver, but it doesn’t work. On the preceding line 2004 it loads the music driver, and right before that it switches the memory mapper bank. Which doesn’t work on the PHC-23J by default.

Ah, it could be that the /U option is specified because otherwise Nextor prevents the ROM disk from booting. Instead, try to flash it without /U option and when the MSX boots keep the R key pressed (if the MFR is in slot 1) or the F key (if MFR is in slot 2). I think this should disable Nextor and allow the ROM disk to boot.

(About ROM disks; the Kai games are essentially disk based games, but put on a cartridge with a special DiskROM which reads from the ROM chip instead of a floppy drive. So when you insert the game cartridge, you’re essentially plugging in a virtual disk drive.)

I knew there was something fishy when it throws me to basic and I can list. I have never seen official ROM games do that. It makes more sense now that it is a disk based game burned into cartridge. THIS IS HOT! You guys are genius!!
