FWIW, the Japanese there differs from the English a bit. The Japanese translates to "Each time you defeat a great demon, I'll give you this." It doesn't specifically name the item as "bread and water."
Presumably, the item was visible at this point, which is why the English named it. But the Japanese also reveals that you would be looking at the item, or even receiving it, when this message is displayed.

Oh, that's interesting, thanks! I generated all the Japanese messages from the ROM, but I can't actually understand what they say.
I finished making the video. If you're interested, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/QatXloCTusE
If you have comments about the video, please post them on YouTube. The algorithm likes that. :-) (I like comments as well, but for me it doesn't matter where you post them.)
Cool!!! Thanks a lot for making this! I will make sure to drop a comment there, just started watching it right now
That was a really, really nice video! An entertaining half hour watch! I’m looking forward to future videos similar to this. Subscribed and left you a comment .
Thanks!
Nice video! Thank you for sharing. I like a lot all those "secrets" some games have (unused rooms, code, graphics, texts, etc.)
