It looks like there are way more text when Salamander is displayed in Japanese, rather than when shown in English. For instance these are the sentences shown when the Crystal Breeze is found:

Who is ALEX? What does the text say? I though the pilots were named Iggy and Zowie.

Yes it is known that most Konami games have (far) shorter texts in English than in Japanese. Only Maze of Galious is mostly as elaborate in Japanese as in English with 1 text even being more elaborate in English. Salamander is on of the prime examples where whole parts of dialogue and screens are missing.

Alex is the navigational computer (not explained in the demos but just in the manual), just like Gaudi in Gofer's Ambition.
The texts for this and all other dual language Konami games have been retranslated. Not gonna put the text here to not spoil an actual (re)translation but the gist basically is that computer is asked what this place is. They found the ruins of a lost city. It is starting to collapse and they find the crystal breeze.

Salamander for the MSX is awesome. Not too often a SHUMP has a well-written storyline; most SHUMPs are just "shoot everything in sight".

@vahan: the whole Gradius series of games on MSX has a well written story, with Gradius Rebirth on Wii following up on the MSX storyline. And GR3's story made by Naramura and friends (before La Mulana) fits nicely in with the MSX storyline as well.

Thanks for the explanation! Where can I find the re-translation?

Nowhere yet; only the script is translated; it's not implemented yet.

With screens, do you mean textual screens or are we missing graphical screens (pictures/animation) on the european version aswell?

I know, I was asking for the scripts Smile

@TheKid: With Salamander I think the pictures/ animations are all there in the European part. Just more texts and other timings (which makes the Japanese demos feel more dynamic/ tense and the European ones more dramatic). But with other games even graphics/ animations are missing. Which reminds me, I need to contact you...

@karloch: I won't release the scripts unless someone was actively working on implementing a full script retranslation. It is on the to do list for MSX Translations. Releasing the script on its own without implementation it would make the added value of an actual translated version almost pointless.

I noticed on my SX-1 that some games started with Japanese text that on my normal MSX didn't.
I changed the default machine setting in SofaRom to English, and then it showed English text for these games.
Not sure if Salamader was one of them though...

Is that something in SofaRom, or are some games multi-language ?

Many Konami games are bilingual. SofaRun but also OPFX can patch the region detection forcing either English or Japanese
