I just saw that ARC needs a specific ROM in a cartridge slot to work. What is specific about this ROM?

@gdx, I would say check the source of the arc rom mapper in openMSX: https://github.com/openMSX/openMSX/blob/master/src/memory/Ro... :)

There's a small rom of I believe 32k and there's some simple logic on an I/O port. That logic is the main part of the copy protection.

I feel a challenge coming up ....

Except for ARC, the games can be downloaded from my archive. If someone is able to supply an ARC version (uncracked, cracked, .DSK & .DMK): feel free to contact me. Please let me know which version you will be sending though so I can add the correct information Smile

Reading Cas's comment, I think that copy protection is all over the place. So that challenge probably would be huge.

I just wonder, can't that logic be integrated into a Carnivore2 somehow. The fpga probably can handle it without taking up too much space.

I honestly think most of them have been removed or fixed by people, so I don't think there's a large remaining challenge. I think that last crystal check in Black Cyclon is possibly the last bit of it. The openMSX fix for ARC should (probably) work even for the later checks, I forgot if there was an additional disk protection check.

There is a professional group doing data-preserving here in Finland. It's mostly free of charge for individuals. They might be interested in taking the challenge with that hard drive.

They have salvaged some pretty hard things before. For example a "lost" game from a floppy disk which was literally left in the woods. They were able to get a dump from damaged media and fix the lost part of the code so that the game was playable again.

FYI, the openMSX emulation of the ARC protection was possible due to the fact that I donated my ARC game to Bifi who did all the work in figuring out the copy protection/cartridge thingy. So again, a big thanks to Bifi.

I will look after the disk images I have of the game this evening and upload them.

Cool. And preferably (also) in .DMK due to the copy protection :) And if possible, if you could send a copy to me as well, I'd be very gratefull.
