What changed is that you have a totally different flashrom cartridge.

I have not read all posts but:
- A stock MFR SD (with or without RAM) will boot into MSX-DOS / Nextor / MultiMente depending on the configuration. It has a ROM Disk (drive A: ) with all the system files, tools, etc.

- In some system, the RAM count after a cold boot could not be right, but the RAM and other features of the cartridge will be available after a few milliseconds.

- If the MFR is really old (about 6-7 years) and have not been updated, try to install the latest software. You can do it in diferrent ways, but perhaps using recovery mode is the easiest one:

Quote:

- Copy to an *EMPTY* SD card the file KERNEL.DAT
https://www.msxcartridgeshop.com/bin/kernel.zip

- Enter recovery mode (holding cursor up while booting)
- Select F4 option
The recovery process should take a few seconds
If the recovery process can’t find the kernel, then try again holding SELECT key when pressing "Y" after selecting F4 option.

That will install Nextor + ROM Disk. Then install DSKROM and RECOVERY:
OPFXSD dskrom.rom /I1
OPFXSD recovery.rom /I34

- If you get "error reading file" or similar, probably there is a problem in the SD slot/card, or the cartridge connector is dirty. Try cleaning the cartridge connector and the computer's slots.

Quote:

Take a thin cloth, wet it with isopropyl alcohol or contact cleaner and then use a credit card to push it into the cartridge slot and then pull it out. After each time move to a different section of the cloth, do it a couple times at least.

- All software, manuals and tutorials (including how to use the cartridge on a MSX with 64K RAM) can be found at www.msxcartridgeshop.com

Thanks for the reply, Manuel! Regarding this, however, I don't think the problem is related to the cartridge or slot being dirty, nor is it seemingly related to the SD card. I've cleaned everything thoroughly, and also tried different slots and SD cards, and the English-patched A Life M36 Planet rom simply WILL NOT install via OPFXSD -- it gives an "Error reading file" and exits the program every time. This is the only rom that's happening with, and I have no explanation as to why, but considering it's the game I hold nearest and dearest to my heart, it's rather frustrating! If you have any means of looking into the reason for this, I'd be most appreciative. If you'd like, please email me, and I can send you the English-patched rom image I'm working with -- which, again, installs fine on my old MFR from floppy disk via OPFX, but simply refuses to install on the new one via OPFXSD.

Thanks!

You can use opfx on the MFRSCC+SD as well if you plug in your older MFR in slot two. That way you don't need to flash from a disk.
Can you link me that rom file? I'm curious to find out if I can get it to run.

I'd have to email it to you, as it's not readily available online -- it's the Japanese rom with a couple IPS patches applied.

If you drop me an email, though, I'll be happy to send it your way to check out.

There is something going on.
It does work as a cartridge in openMSX.
It does flash to MegaFlashROMSCC+SD (no errors during flash)
However it does not start. The program is in some kind of loop because the MSX didn't crash.

According to the softwaredb.xml file of openMSX it's ascii8, but your file is not there, your sha-1 is different from the translated/bugfixed versions in there.
I can't tell you who's to blame, the coders or the mfr or opfxsd. I suspect the game because the original does work on mfrssc+sd. I wonder how the other versions mentioned in the softwaredb will do.

Interesting. Does it not start in openMSX either? Because I just tested it in BlueMSX (the only MSX emulator I have on this PC), and it starts up perfectly fine for me. And as noted, it not only flashes successfully when I use OPFX on my old MFR, it also plays perfectly fine off of that MFR.

I do recall there was an issue where the original cartridge -- and by extension, the rom of it -- wouldn't play on certain models of MSX due to some questionable coding in the original game. But if that were what's happening, then the original Japanese rom shouldn't play for you either, as the bug was not introduced in the fan-translation but was present from the original release. (In fact, I seem to recall the fan-translation may have addressed this, and may even be MORE compatible than the original Japanese cartridge? Though I may be mistaken, as it's been a few years now at this point.)

Very odd, though. I'll try a different rom and see if that works a bit better. I don't think the one I'm using is the latest version of the fan-translation anyway -- MP83 and Hubz made some tweaks to it for quite a few weeks after I'd basically called it done, and I never downloaded any of their updates because they were really minor (adding commas to the text and such), so maybe if I use the very newest patch, I'll have more luck.

Thanks!

The original game works and the patched one doesn't. I'm not qualified to blame the game or the mfr or opfxsd, but I'm leaning towards the game being the culprit.
