exits many model of VG 8020 check the number near VG8020 /
the /00 have 2 x LS157 between the joystick port and the PSG

look inside your MSX
if you have a S3527 chip the joystik port is directly or also by self
if you have a real PSG YM2149 or other PSG the joystick port is decoded by 2 X 74LS157
search service manual 8020 on internet

download this files is for VG8020/00 , i don't find /40

search the PSG and the joystick port and you find 74LS157
check the pinout before solder because is not the same version
