The rationality behind the Beer IDE (hence its name) was to be "cheap as beer". But it's an inefficient design because of this.
Adding more hardware would make it more expensive to produce than a Sunrise IDE, and it would still be horribly inefficient.
Better invest your time to build an SD-Mapper v2? It's very cheap, supports Nextor, card hot swap and is the fastest mass storage interface available for the MSX.
