I've just got this guys....

Dear ditman,

Much to our regret we have to inform you that ASCII Solutions has decided not to produce the One Chip MSX computer. Unfortunately, the amount of pre-orders required for the device to be produced (5,000) was not reached. In accordance with the pre-order agreement, we hereby cancel your pre-order of a One Chip MSX computer.

At this moment MSX Association, the Japanese organization Bazix represents outside the Japanese borders, is investigating the possibilities of producing the One Chip MSX with a different partner, whilst considering to make a few alterations to the One Chip MSX design. If a decision has been made on this matter, we will inform you personally by e-mail.

Finally we would like to thank you for placing your pre-order and the trust you've put in the One Chip MSX computer. We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts on the future of the One Chip MSX computer with us by sending an email to info@bazix.nl.

If the last effort of MSX Association still fails than MSX will die a slow death.
At last, the only thing left are the emu's.

Please do keep in mind that the project has not been dropped. As you can read in the e-mail MSXA are investigating the possibilities of producing the One Chip MSX with a different partner, whilst considering to make a few alterations to the One Chip MSX design. Things have certainly not become easier, but not impossible either. Lets wait and see what future announcements on the matter have to say.

As for opinions on the OCM: feel free to mail then to info@bazix.nl or post them here. Although Bazix nor MSXA can guarantee your suggestions will be implemented, they will most certainly be heard.

What is the main reason that 3200 pieces isn't enough to get into production? Is it the PCB, investment needed for the casing, or ??
Does anyone know the background of the 5000 pieces needed for production? (or why 3200 isn't enough?)

As a designer/engineer of mass-production consumer products I know a product might become economically possible again by taking a step back and making other choices in production techniques...

*if* it fits on the proposed fpga-unit or for the same price.. otherwise we end up with a more expensive fpga chip.. everything has a pricetag..

As with modern PC's, there might be some value in a strong videochip and a normal CPU rather than a strong CPU and a slower videochip..

I beleive that they need 5000 orders to get a discount on the fpga...
The 200 euros price including port was quite cheap , maybe they should have
proposed an MSX2 with OCM for 250 euros and a lower number pre order required...

Tilburg 2K1 -- Nishi proposed a single-chip, $100 MSX. Strange thing is, when there's price namings involved, they always tend to rise. $100 is about €80-€90 orso, and the price of the OCM was high already. I can imagine ASCII/MSXA sticking to what their chairman (well, for this project) had claimed, and wanted to get as close to that $100 as they possibly could. Can't blame them though. Can blame ASCII for not putting that little bit more effort on the line. Hell, they could've expanded the OCM-preorder period to December 31st!
