As the title says, I'm interested in getting an MSX system. My basic requirements are these:

  • NTSC MSX 2 system.
  • 64KB RAM or more, or the ability to easily upgrade (i.e. dropping in or soldering some chips instead of having to track down an obscure upgrade item.)
  • Built-in or separately-included 3.5" disk drive.
  • Real, non-chiclet, non-membrane keyboard (AFAIK there weren't MSX2 machines with these, but you never know.)

Anything else would be absolute gravy, but I'm not going to get my hopes up too high, since it seems that the really cool add-ons (Konami SCC, etc.) are very hard to come by. I'm not looking to pay more than $150 US + S/H unless it's a particularily good setup (unfortunately, this all but rules out eBay, since this is one of the worst platforms for price-driving.)

Given that this may be a bit bulky, I'd like to find something in the US, but I'm open to hearing offers from other countries. Anybody have one of these that could use a new home?

I'd go for at least 128KB RAM. 64 is enough for Japanese games (minus a handful), but with 128 you can also run most European demos and homebrew games.

Konami SCC games like Metal Gear 2, SD-Snatcher, Space Manbow are a bit tricky to find cheap, but early SCC games like F1-Spirit, Nemesis 2, Kings Valley 2 and such are far more common and cheap.

Well, I'm definitely open to 128KB+, but it's not a minimum requirement for me. Nice to know about the earlier SCC games, though; I wonder how easy it is to adapt one of them for use outside the cart game?

Plenty people who are into hardware can put a switch in these cartridges that enables you to use 'em for your own things, like making music, running a demo which supports SCC, or play one of the -but not so many- homebrew games with SCC music.

And I really really strongly suggest 128+.. Tongue
