The UCN-01 is a flat cable with on one side a standard MSX cartridge and on the other side the connector for connecting the synth module.

Right now there is a SFG-05 on Ebay complete with the cable:

Thanks - that's very helpful.
So, it does look like the UCN-01 is just a passive adaptor.

But it does beg a further question, and you'll have to accept my apologies if it's a silly one, but since the UCN-01 + SFG-01 occupies the cartridge slot, how is one supposed to used the Playcard Reader system (which also occupies the cartridge slot) at the same time as the FM Synth?

I think I might be better off just looking for a Yamaha MSX :-)

Well most MSX computers have 2 slots so you can use one for the synth-module and the other one for the card-reader. When you have the CX5M there's no problem because the module is built in the computer and doesn't occupy a slot. You still have one slot for the cardreader. If you want to use something else on the CX5M you can buy an additionall adapter to convert the Yamaha slot on the rear to an ordinary MSX slot.

I have a Toshiba HX-10. I got it cheap on eBay LOL!
I guess I need one of the following:

  • a Slot Expander
  • an MSX with >1 Cartridge Slot
  • a Yamaha MSX (which may also remove the need for an FM Synth module)

Okay, yeah that one unfortunately only has one slot. It does have a connector on the back side but I think that's only for a diskdrive. Maybe there's a conversion for this one as well but I'm not sure of that. Maybe someone else on the forum knows something more.....

Thanks for the info - it's been very helpful. I'm still learning about MSX in general, and I don't really know what I'm doing yet.

I'm starting to think my best option is to look for a Yamaha CX5M machine, and just keep the Toshiba machine for fiddling around with and playing games!

I saw the "Expansion Bus" port on the back, but it's covered over with a blanking plate on mine, for some reason.

The microswitch inside the cartridge slot intrigues me. When pushed, it seems to power the machine down, but an inserted cartridge holds it pushed all the time, yet the machine works with a cartridge inserted. How does that work then?
