Ah, ok.

Skate or Die doesn’t use the DAC at all, it uses one of the DCSG tone channels where it changes the channel volume really rapidly to produce PCM sounds.

The (current) small VGM file version of Skate or Die uses stream control commands to send this rapidly changing volume data to the DCSG. These commands are not currently supported in VGMPlay MSX.

The (old) huge VGM file version of Skate or Die just sends the volume changes as normal commands. This works, however you need a lot of memory, and normal VGMPlay builds are limited to 4 MB so you will get an out of memory error. So I need to give you a custom build to test that with.

So you are using the TurboR Timer + R800 speed + DCSG (Franky/Playsoni/MMM) for get it.

Yep. If you want to try it and have enough memory, the Skate or Die zip I linked to earlier includes an old custom VGMPlay build which can do it.

Hey Grauw, Great work with the new 1.3 release candidate! Fantastic to finally hear the Megadrive soundtracks (Vampire Killer, Contra) on my MSX, with some extra sound chips attached of course ;-) And the display of the track length is also a good addition.

I noticed some small problems with this version compared to VGMPlay 1.2.

My DalSorRi 2 doesn't play YMF274B wave soundtracks (like Asura Blade) when inserted in a slot expander (I use the one produced by Tecnobytes). In my primary MSX TurboR slot, there is not a problem. In a secondary, there is only noise. FM tracks play fine.

With the GR8NET Stereo, the SCC+ is recognized, but doens't play a note. I know there are many configuration options with the GR8NET, I use NETTGTMAP(24) and NETSAVE to preserve the configuration (FM-PAK and SCC/SCC+ is in subslot 3). This used to work with VGMPlay 1.2 but not anymore. My GR8NET has the latest firmware update, v 0.8. Maybe your SCC detection is stricter than before and I need to set something else in my GR8NET, but at the moment I don't know what...

If I can do some test for you to get rid of these bugs (if they are bugs ;-) just let me know. Thanks for your fantastic work again!

I just found a DalSoRi R2 wave bug as well when testing this evening, it sounds similar to what you described though at the same time quite different as well, as it wasn’t slot related. Anyway, I uploaded an 1.3-rc2 build, you can try that. (Also make sure to check whether it is detected as DalSoRi R2.)

As for GR8NET, I had tested it with mapper mode 11 (iirc) before not 24, I did change the detection method but it should be more simple and robust now so hrm. So many SCC clones makes testing difficult :). I’ll bring my GR8NET to the fair tomorrow and test it there if I don’t forget.

@Alexito, I can’t reproduce your issue unfortunately :(. I tried my PlaySoniq in my MK slotexpander and it works fine. The detection uses the I/O registers only so it shouldn’t be slot expander related.

@Parn, I tried the DCSG on PSG volume scaling and indeed it’s quite noticeably better!

The release will be postponed a bit because a few more isues were found during the MSX fair today.

1. Darky not detected properly (fixed 1.3-rc3).
2. Carnivore2 detection fails on real Carnivore2 cartridges (works in emulator).

Additionally, there’s the GR8NET SCC and PlaySoniq issues reported here earlier.

If you find anything else please let me know.

Hello Grauw, thanks for the test builds. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problems I mentioned. The DalSoRi2 is still only detected and used in a primary slot. I tried different subslots in my expander but without positive result. VGMPlay shows 'DalSoRi R2' in the primary TurboR slot, but 'MoonSound' in the expander.

I also tried mapper mode 11 on my GR8NET (Konami with SCC in subslot 3). This also didn't help.

For the rest all the new supported sound chips looks very promising! Can't wait till I can get my hands on a Neotron or Makito! If I can help with some more testing, just let me know.

@Grauw: I can't seem to find the tool to convert C140 vgm's to OPL4 vgm's. Do you have a name or even better a link?
