I run a review channel on Youtube where I use original hardware wherever possible.

https://www.youtube.com/user/chinnyhill10

Now I recently purchased a Hit Bit 75B to add to the roster of formats covered. So far so good! I only have tape loading available for the time being. No money for carts or SD card solutions.

What I've noticed is a habit of MSX games to be poorly and quickly ported from the Spectrum. EG Flying Shark which still has the Spectrum joystick options on the menu! Not good!

So what would be good is to find some MSX tape games that preferably exist on other 8 bit formats such as the Spectrum, CPC, Atari and C64 which I can review.

Standalone MSX only games are also of interest to me but I always think its interesting to compare formats.

So what are good examples of MSX games I can play from tape as so far I've been struggling to find any titles that have got me excited or show the MSX off.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Well I've got the entire archive of MSX tape games so sourcing them isn't a problem. What I'm looking for is good examples of MSX tape games because most of the ones I've come across so far are poor Spectrum ports.

There are couple of nice cassette games for MSX in my opinion that are worth checking out like: Gauntlet, Elite, Avenger, Venom Strikes Back, Feud, Jack The Nipper 2, Who Dares Wins 2, Boulder Dash 1 & 2, Auf Wiedersehen Monty etc.

But in general, japanese based cartridge games were the best and most original that MSX had to offer, cassette games were more or less conversions from Europe based games.

Thanks Akiguchi. I've made a note of those.

I'd love to get some cartridge games but the budget was eaten up by buying the MSX. The multicart option looks good although its pricey compared to the Atari cartridges such as the MyIDE2 which cost about half!

Akiguchi is right on point (I missed Jet Set Willy though Tongue)

Back in the 1980s most (non mega) ROMs where dumped to cassette files mostly consisting of 1 or 2 16Kb files... that's why I gave you the generation-msx link.

Here is your first request: Alpha Roid (http://www.generation-msx.nl/software/pony-canyon/alpha-roid...)

Arkanoid is a good one to do at some point. It has a BBC Micro Port and it's a rare thing among BBC Micro games as its an arcade port that isn't rubbish. Sounds like the MSX version is good as well.
