Hi All,

I've managed to backup the DMS-II sequencer ROM and have put the process (and ROM-image) online at http://www.cx5m.net

Have fun with it.

Nice!

Is this the DMS1 (mark 2) that dms1guy talked about in the other thread, or something different?

You can find DMS1 (mark 1) here, maybe you can also make it available on cx5m.net.

Great site by the way :). And thanks for dumping DMS2 for us all!

Do you also have the original dump still? This one says www.cx5m.net when starting up. I doubt that was in the original code :P

It seems to be DMS1 Mark 2 and you can try it on blueMSX 2.8.2 or the first 2.8.3 beta (in more recent betas, there are bugs in the MIDI support), but probably additionnal support is required to make it run completely (the cursor hangs).

Now we have two questions :

- why is the text 'WWW.CX5M.NET' included in the ROM (at offset C92) ?

- is this a 'remake' by Carolyn Eng of an original soft made first by Abdul H. Ibrahim (author of the first version of DMS1) ?

Yeah, it also hangs after 4 seconds in openMSX. But the mouse support works Smile (Briefly!) I didn't find a way to let the program show the title, but the ROM says: "DMS1 Mk2 MIDI RECORDER"

Indeed, it's at offset 77D.

Just checked the mouse, it works only a short time also in blueMSX (booting needs to be made with mouse in port 1).

Ah, that’s good to know. So it is indeed that! Too bad it has the cx5m.net “tag” in the ROM, I like the site very much but I think ROMs should be dumped in pristine unmodified state.

p.s. @Manuel @mars2000you Indeed the ROM works fine on a real CX5MII.

Either way, I’m very impressed with the software! It looks great, much fancier than the Yamaha stuff, and also seems very advanced. Also a big scroll thing at the bottom telling me when I had a MIDI framing error Smile. I can only hope Synthesix will ever be this solid a piece of software!

However it is missing a manual haha. Trying to figure this out…

After some fiddling, here’s how to lay down a simple phrase:

1. In track mode (“1”, bottom right), click on the red and blue icons to enable them
2. In sequence mode (“2”, bottom right), click on the first position in track 1 to lay down a phrase
3. Click on the REC option at the top, cursor turns to REC mode (click again to turn off)
4. Click on the 001 phrase you just laid down to prime it for recording
5. Press the REC transport control at the bottom
6. Press the PLAY transport control at the bottom and start playing on your MIDI controller
7. After you’re done, press PLAY to play back the sequence

Some further observations…

When using cursor keys, use CLS/HOME and DEL in stead of the left and right mouse buttons. The RETURN key also seems to work as a left mouse button sometimes, but not always (e.g. on MON it doesn’t increase the number).

In phrase mode (bottom right), you can click on the first (green) number to change the current phrase selection. Click on the second (white) number to change the phrase length. After you’ve recorded the phrase, it will say “used” for that phrase and you can’t change the length anymore.

If you press the PAGE button with left / right mouse button, you go a page forward and backward in sequence and phrase mode. In sequence mode, right click any of the TRACK labels to toggle to the other 8 tracks.

In the track mode (“1”), you can click on the red and blue things to toggle them on and off. They control whether the track listens to MIDI input (red) and outputs MIDI or is muted (blue). If you right-click on the number, you enter a menu with various settings such as MIDI channel. Click on the empty space to enter a track name. Left / right click on the green dots to alter the track volume.

When I try to save to a SD card in the MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD, unfortunately it tells me “Disk error”. Also if I boot in MSX-DOS 1 mode.

Now I need to get me a second MIDI lead, because all this switching between inputs and outputs all the time isn’t working for me Smile. (Have a pair on order for ages together with a preordered Arturia Beatstep, but they’re taking their sweet time…)

Wow ! well done you guys.
I never thought I would see the mk2 ever again. I really poured sweat and tears into doing a much more advanced version compared to the Mk1 DMS1, and I spent ages on the graphics and soft-scrolling message window (using the Apple character set from the early Macintosh computers). Also, I am using the hardware memory manager to bank switch memory pages, and of course driving the mouse as well.

Now I just need to get my hands on some real CX5M hardware to run it.
Would be great to see it running in an emulator.

Well done again you guys !
