Hey everyone, I've noticed that there's no list around of software that is hard disk installable on the MSX. I've been looking for one, and I find individual programs listed as hard disk installable, but not a list of all of them. So I figured we should make one. I'll start.

Snatcher - English Translation
Bombaman
Psycho World
Trojka (with patch)
Pumpkin Adventure 1 (with fix)
Blue Warrior

That's all I've got so far. Anyone care to fill in the blanks?

Do you mean software with installers or software which will run from harddisk?

Either/or, but not stuff that requires floppy disk emulators like HDDEMU or RUNIT to run, software that either has an installer, can be copied to the hard disk and ran, or software that can be patched to allow running from hard disk.

Most games that run from BASIC (with Bload"" ) will work on a fat12 partition, if you don't have any drivers (like FAT16 or IDECDEX) installed. Some games also have problems with DOS2 or command 2.4x.

All Megaram games work straight from HD, most even on fat16.

Only games that read direct from disk sectors (reading data, or just using some sort of copy protection) needs to use some disk emulator.

I don't own a megaram though, so megaram games aren't useful to me.

Hey everyone, I've noticed that there's no list around of software that is hard disk installable on the MSX.
Either/or, but not stuff that requires floppy disk emulators like HDDEMU or RUNIT to run, software that either has an installer, can be copied to the hard disk and ran, or software that can be patched to allow running from hard disk.
Maybe that's because "can be run from harddisk" is not an attribute of a specific software title, but of the version of that software. And there could be many of those, each with their own can / can't do's.

For example: many popular MSX titles are Konami megaROMs, and (well duh...) they can't be run from harddisk, they are inserted as a cartridge into an MSX. There are cracked versions of those, and one cracked version may behave one way, another cracked version behaves another way. Therefore you can't say 'Konami title XYZ works from harddisk' (or not). A similar story goes for original floppy software (copy protections and such).

If you want to make a database of that, then mostly you'd have a database of what cracked versions exist, and what you have to do to get these cracked versions to work. Personally, I have little motivation to help people there.

May I suggest you go through your own software collection, and see what's needed to make things run? After trying enough programs, you usually get a feel for it, or you'll remember required steps for a few favorite programs. Usual suspects include:

  • Boot with as few drives installed as possible
  • Disable memory-resident stuff like MemMan, FAT16 patch, DOS2 RAMdisk, music replayers etc.
  • MAP.COM / MAP.BIN to patch DOS2 mapper routines
  • Sometimes a drive name is hard-coded (=run everything from A: )

I can run practically ALL simple ROMs (8~32K) from harddisk (usually don't need to reboot before starting the next game). The floppy emulation built into the SD flash interface can run many disk images (I know, doesn't apply to other flash/harddisk interfaces). Most stuff that starts from DOS, works OK. Many things that come as loose files on a floppy, and BASIC programs, work. Many megaROM cracks as well. And with a little help here & there, frankly there's few software you can't run without using a real floppy drive (I assume that's your point). Perhaps it would be easier to make a list of software you can't get to work? (and try to shorten that list)

King's Valley (Konami Game Collection Vol.1) from Konami run from Hard Disk ... Even from the real Floppy Disk on MSX Simulators. The other disk is copy protected!

Ok so perhaps I should specify a bit. I'm not talking about cracks of games, I'm talking about games that run from hard disk as they are in their original release or ones with a patch made by the community to get them to run from hard disk. I know there are lots of cracks out there that run from hard disk, so that's not what I am interested in, I'm talking about a list that people can consult of what stock games will run from hard disk or if they require a patch where that patch can be found.
