You cannot until we change something with the window size. We still have a 4:3 window (which fits MSX screens), also at full screen, so that gives you black areas at the sides.

Hmmm, the Android version does a good job to get full screen mode on 16:9 without black borders but this setting is missing in the Windows version.

There is no special setting or whatever you mean. The Android port does exactly the same: the MSX output is just 4:3 and there are black borders at the sides. The only thing is that the SDL-port for Android puts the controls on the sides of the screen, partly on the black part. But that's just these Android-specific controls that can't be used anyway in openMSX 16.0 or later, as you are aware of.

Under Change Device Configuration (when booting OpenMSX and displaying SDL logo) I can uncheck the option to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio, resulting in full screen on 16:9. This setting can be found under Video Settings. Just tried on my smartphone.

Everything in that menu is specific stuff in that Android sdl port, which is not in the openMSX source code.

Does your smartphone have 16:9? Mine has 19.5:9... That would mean rather radical stretching...
